ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
LOVE IS BORN AT CHRISTMAS is the long-awaited debut recording from acclaimed vocalist David Edelfelt, praised by the Chicago Tribune as having "a luxuriant instrument... [that] probably sounds great singing the weather forecast." This timeless yet distinctively new collection of Christmas songs brings jazz, pop and classical elements to sacred & secular classics made all the more stunning by David's powerful, rich vocals. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune writes: "Chicago is home to many fine cabaret voices, and Edelfelt owns one of the best. His plush bass-baritone commands attention in any repertoire, yet it seems particularly well-suited to holiday fare that's all about warmth, love and hope. Thus, "Winter Wonderland" becomes something of a dream... And in "The Christmas Song", Edelfelt conjures more tonal nuance than one might have believed a single voice could produce in such familiar fare."

Mr. Edelfelt has crafted a very personal yet universally appealing collection of holiday favorites with an impressive variety of emotions and styles. Born out of the mixture of joy and sadness known to many of us during the holiday season, this recording project came to David during the first anniversary of his father's death at Christmastime. He found it was the familiar music of the season that helped him through his grief, and the result is an album made both for those who love the holiday and those who are challenged by it.

With his silky, velvety voice that New York Cabaret Scenes Magazine compared to "hot caramel," Edelfelt puts his own personal mark on mostly familiar (and a few newer) holiday songs. Backed by creative and sensitive accompaniments of jazz trio, harp and guitar, David takes the listener on a journey from the cool bounce of "Winter Wonderland" to the poignancy of "I'll Be Home For Christmas", through the haunting "In the Bleak Midwinter" all the way to the joyous "Go, Tell In On The Mountain." With his warm, caressing voice and interpretive skill, David gives a reverence to "Some Children See Him" which he uniquely pairs with "A Child is Born" in a way that makes us understand the title of the album. "Mary, Did You Know?" allows Edelfelt to do what he does best; make us feel the shiver of wonder as we contemplate the true meaning of Christmas. His own arrangement of "Silent Night" (accompanied by himself on piano) makes the nearly 200-year-old song appear completely fresh, yet appropriately reverent.

One of the collection's highlights is a newer, destined to be seasonal classic, "God Bless My Family", composed by platinum award-winning singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway, which also features guest vocals by cabaret favorites Tom Michael and Amy Matheny. David also offers a clever twist on three perennial holiday favorites for the children in all of us (Jingle Bells/Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town/Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) that would bring a smile to Mr. Scrooge himself.

David Edelfelt's LOVE IS BORN AT CHRISTMAS conveys all the emotion that the holidays bring, and exemplifies the deepest and truest meaning of the season; family, friends, fun, faith, and Love. Treat yourself to this recording that is sure to become a part of your future family traditions.

warm, smooth, rich, deep voice -- absolutely gorgeous
I received this cd a couple of days ago. My husband and I just listened to it and both of us are very impressed with David's voice. He has a wonderful tone. The smoothness of his voice reminds us of Nat King Cole and Mel Torme. He easily hits deep bass notes and his falsetto is lovely. Most importantly, he conveys the emotional feel of the songs; he means what he sings. I'll be buying more copies.

Beautiful
From the first song to the last, this CD is beautiful, sung with both sensitivity and loads of personality. When hearing it the first time, it was exciting for one song to end so I could hear what David had in store for the listener next. What a voice!
