Album Notes
Stand Up That Mountain is an award-winning book published in 2012, and now publicly available for the first time is Stand Up That Mountain, the inspiring song.

Author Jay Erskine Leutze and singer-songwriter David Kilburn Ray have a decade-long friendship arising out of their land conservation work, and forged by a common interest in language, music, good stories, and the great outdoors.

Stand Up That Mountain the song came about after Ray overheard the author describe the trying experience in the book as “ultimately life-affirming.” Realizing that the story was not only about conservation, but also about the human spirit, Ray penned the song in one night, inspired by Leutze and the other central characters, Ashley and Ollie. As he tells it, “I realized that while the book purports to be about standing up a mountain, at heart it is about people standing themselves up and refusing to be the victims of injustice.”

The recording features some of Asheville, North Carolina's finest musicians accompanying Ray's guitar and lead vocals: Natalya Weinstein of Red June on fiddle, Kari Sickenberger of Polecat Creek on harmony vocals, and River Guerguerian and Chris Rosser of Free Planet Radio on drums and bass (the latter of whom also engineered and mixed the track). Author Leutze calls this recording “absolutely amazing” in how it conveys the emotional essence of the Stand Up That Mountain story.
