Album Notes
LIFE IS GOOD. Through the world created by this CD, a child has the power to turn a negative thought into a positive one. Research from the field of Positive Psychology tells us that very early in life, children develop explanatory styles to help understand events that happen to them, shaping their emotional reactions. These styles can be positive or negative, and they are the roots of optimism and pessimism. The soundtrack of Feeling Positive has been composed to make this explanation and self-talk hopeful and optimistic, preparing kids for a life of engagement, enjoyment and meaning. The songs from this CD are designed to help your child develop:
-Curiosity and courage
-Hope and optimism
-Kindness and gratitude

Feeling Positive is based on the key findings from the field of Positive Psychology. Although still early in its history, the field of Positive Psychology has a lot to offer caregivers who want to optimize the development of their children. Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology challenged the field of Psychology to transcend the focus on deficits to turn to discovery of the cause of happiness and character strengths. The classification system of character strengths that Seligman and Peterson developed included 1) Strengths of wisdom and knowledge; 2) Strengths of courage; 3) Strengths of humanity; 4) Strengths of temperance; and 5) Strengths of transcendence. In this CD we have taken strengths from each of these categories that appear to emerge in early childhood and have developed musical strategies for parents and teachers to encourage these character strengths at home and in the classroom.
Strengths of wisdom and knowledge: Creativity; Curiosity
Strengths of courage: Persistence
Strengths of humanity: Kindness
Strengths of temperance: Self-regulation
Strengths of transcendence: Gratitude; Hope

Some tracks are “Self-talk” songs that help a child to internalize positive statements and beliefs about themselves, other people, and the world in general. Other songs are “Experiential songs” that allow the child to experience and practice the positive skills we want them to learn. Finally, there are “Story songs” that help the child understand another’s perspective, a key skill in the emergence of empathy.

The lyrics convey important messages form positive psychology and the rich music orchestrates experiences of “positivity” for parents and children alike. We trust that these songs will be important sources of learning and enjoyment for all.

Growing Sound develops musical products that translate key findings from recent child development research into practical and entertaining products for teachers, parents and children.
