Album Notes
Knopfler said "Underland was written in a moment of quiet anger when I heard the staggering statistic about how many homes in the US were being repossessed annually." It's one of 18 acoustic tracks soon to be released as an album called simply "Acoustic." Knopfler continues "The idea we had was to essentially take our live Duo show (David Knopfler with Harry Bogdanovs) into the studio and perform it there, much in the same spirit as we might have if on stage... no overdubs... no big productions... just the singer and two acoustic guitars bouncing off each other. It was fun to do, in the full knowledge that we'd have to sit on our hands and not try to correct all the honest little gremlins live work creates. It was a very satisfying experience performing the new songs with the old and just letting the performances be whatever they wanted to be that particular day.

It takes three jobs, to make the rent.
The Government don't understand.
They'll take my taxes but they don't give a damn.
I'm going down in Underland.

Is there no hope in Underland?
Can someone help me understand
Why every home is repossessed?
Why every dream must end in Underland.

All my troubles seem so small
Against the troubles of this big wide world
But try explain it, to my precious girl
Why every single leaf must fall

Is there no hope for Underland?
Can someone help her understand
Why every house is repossessed
Why every dream must end in Underland.

I'm drowning in a sea of sand
I'm crying but my eyes are dry
The King of Nothingness is in command
Feels like no one has a dream or plan
And I believed it, every time
Her holy water turning into wine
Oh I believed in every line
All her promises, so sublime in Underland

Is there no hope for Underland
Will someone help me understand
Why everything is repossessed
Why every dream seems cursed
Lord help me now to understand
In these shadows of the dispossessed
Why every house is barred and banned?
Where every fucking dream may be your last in Underland.
