Album Notes
Roots and Branches by David Lauterstein
Guitarist and Co-Director of Lauterstein-Conway Massage School

This is the first live recording of music for relaxation and massage! It was recorded live to actual hour-long massages being performed in the recording studio, Murray Music, in Austin, Texas.

The Story of Roots and Branches:

David Lauterstein (born in Chicago, 1947) has been a massage therapist since 1977 and an innovator in massage therapy education since 1982. He is Co-founder of The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School (founded 1989) in Austin, Texas. Previously he was a faculty member of the Chicago School of Massage Therapy, the Midwest Center for Oriental Medicine, and Dean of Faculty at the Texas School of Massage Studies. He is the author of The Deep Massage Book: How to Combine Structure and Energy in Bodywork (Redwing Book Company, 2012), Putting Soul Back in the Body, "What is Zero Balancing?", and is former editor of Massage Therapy Journal. He teaches trainings around the world in Deep Massage: The Lauterstein Method and Zero Balancing®, both methods that emphasize the art as well as the science of bodywork. He is the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award from AMTA in 2012 and the Educator of the Year Award from the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education in 2013.

He also has been a guitarist for 50 years. As a young man, 1960-65, he studied at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. Participating early in the Chicago music scene, he learned and practiced folk music, blues and rock and roll with friend and mentor, Michael Bloomfield, and sat at the feet of such masters as Big Joe Williams, Sleepy John Estes, Robbie Basho, Muddy Waters, and Otis Spann. In 1967, David studied sarod and Indian classical singing with Ali Akbar Khan and Ashiish Khan at the American Society for the Eastern Arts in Berkeley, California. He received his Bachelors degree in Music Composition from University of Illinois in 1972. His primary teachers were Herbert Brun and Wolf Rosenberg with whom Mr. Lauterstein studied for a year as a post-graduate in Munich, Germany.

He gradually transitioned from music to massage in the 1970’s and music took a back seat. However, as time went on, music re-emerged and became linked more closely to massage. He saw massage itself as a form of human “composition”, improvising with the living human as the medium, instead of just musical tones. Correspondingly, he increasingly experienced music as a form of acoustical massage, deepening relaxation and peace of mind, body, and spirit.

Over the years, Mr. Lauterstein gradually incorporated guitar-playing into his teaching of massage and bodywork. He was, at first, inspired to respond with his guitar to the beauty of bodywork being done. Then he began regularly accompanying and inspiring students at Lauterstein-Conway School and in workshops he has taught throughout the U.S. and in the U.K. He developed a style of improvising on themes evoked by the spirit of the actual massage and bodywork as it was being performed. This makes for more deeply inspired work on the part of the students and facilitates deeper healing experiences for the receivers. The result was an improvised music literally made from and for massage and relaxation.

Finally, after years of people requesting he record, he invented a way to preserve the nature of these improvisations. He approached musician and friend, David Murray, of Murray Music in Austin, Texas. The proposal was to record acoustic guitar live to actual massages being performed in the recording studio. The CD you now have is the first result of their collaboration.

David Lauterstein lives in Austin, Texas – the Live Music Capital of the World – with his wife, Julie, massage therapist and painter, and his son, Jake, also a massage therapist, guitarist and songwriter.

6 years on and it's still fresh
If you've ever studied with David, listening to this CD can take you back to all the fun you had learning from him. If you haven't, David plays while you work with what he's just taught you, and it's a unique and delightful experience to have a teacher serenade you as you transform words into action. My daughter had her babies to this music, and now she plays it when she puts them to bed. I am an acupuncturist at a detox clinic. I play this R & B every week. The people meditate to it as part of their detox, and will have nothing else.
A music genius as well as a massage genius. How many gifts can one man have!

Serene and Soothing
Roots and Branches is a favorite of mine and of my clients. It's timeless music that I never get tired of listening to. David's inclusion of massage therapists actually performing massage in the studio while this was being recorded was a stroke of genius. I highly recommend it--not just for massage therapists, but for anyone who loves good music. It's impossible to remain in a stressed-out frame of mind (and body) when you listen to it.

A perfect selection for Massage & Reiki work
I received a copy of this CD before it went into the mainstream and I use it during all my sessions. Just listening to the first two notes I am transported, as are my clinets ! Thank you David !!

Heart Strings & the resonance of Healing Touch
David Lauterstein's method of therapeutic bodywork is a valuable contribution to the world of massage and the facilitation of healing on so many levels.Ive been honored to have been a student of his school and know first hand his methodology. This improvised piece reflects the heart centered intentions and expressions of an artist who has first hand knowledge of music composition and healing touch. This music can be utilized for just about anything, in my opinion. Massage, meditation, a romantic dinner,a casual evening with friends at the house, journaling or any endeavor in which instrospection and intimacy is the focus. You will not be dissapointed in this piece of music. Seamless and flowing and backed by heart centered compassion this Cd is a must have for all of us who are facilitators in healing bodywork.

Perfect music for giving massage!
Relaxing, mellow guitar music quickly assists your clients into that relaxed, mellow state! I was searching for music that every client could enjoy that was nonverbal, that would help them let go of mental concerns and relax their bodies. This CD is one hour-long track of fluid instrumental guitar, played by massage teacher and master guitarist David Lauterstein. It's quickly become a favorite.
