Fling the Church Doors Open Wide

by David Lohman

The Church as it ought to be. The World as it ought to be. A Church where the doors have been flung open wide. A World where absolutely everyone belongs. That is what my music is about. That welcome is my song.

Album Notes
“Oh, may our hearts and minds be opened,
Fling the church doors open wide!
May there be room enough for everyone inside.
For in God there is a welcome, in God we all belong.
May that welcome be our song.”

I grew up a very scared gay kid. The son of a Lutheran pastor, I was scared of feelings that I didn’t want nor understand, scared that if anyone found out about them I would lose their love, and scared of what this all meant to my eternal soul. Scared queer kids like I was are still killing themselves because of what their churches teach. I have devoted much of my life since to working for a world in which queer kids growing up in the Church don’t have to experience the kind of pain, isolation, and despair that filled my own adolescent years.

"David Lohman’s stirring music of welcome and liberation includes anthems, spot-on lyrics, hymns young people love to sing. One day, Spirit willing, these will be sung and affirmed across the land. Prepare to shed a tear, take someone by the hand, step out with new courage, and let your voice swell in the justice chorus that David directs with passion and skill." - Mary E. Hunt, Ph.D., Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual (WATER)
