Album Notes
Mooney has been pushing the envelope of sound since he began experimenting with reel to reel tape manipulation in the early 1960s. After digressing through visual arts for a couple of decades (the images used on the Interior Landscape CD represent this work), he returned to sound in the early 1990s. In over 100 compositions he has explored the boundaries between the intelligible and the unintelligible, the real and the ireal, the possible and the impossible. He uses both sampled and synthesized sounds for compositions using the spoken word, pure sound, and various combinations of the two. For Interior Landscape, all sounds were derived from numerous hours of field recordings made in Pittsburgh, including urban ambiance, sound walks, a parade, a vintage car race, a dog park, bus rides, strolls though department stores and supermarkets, and much more. He makes full use of the serendipitous, the unplanned, unexpected, and irreproducible sounds gathered in unrehearsed contexts to create an imaginary soundscape fully within the shifting boundary area. Mooney's work has been performed internationally at various music conferences and festivals and has been released on a number of CDs over the past two decades.
