Album Notes
Santa Maria Hotel is the album I always wanted to make -- ever since I was a kid back in Alabama, listening to Hank and Haggard when my contemporaries were into Zeppelin and The Ramones. Country Music, real Country Music, is what brought me to Nashville in the first place, and these songs are a product of my passion for the genre. Thanks to producer Milan Miller, Alex McCollough, all the co-writers and players who lent their gifts to this project, and to you, for visiting this page and being interested in this music. Davis

When it Raines...you pour...alotta whiskey
Imagine pulling off the road in an un-airconditioned '81 Ford F-150 in West Texas, where there ain't alot of nothin' but tumbleweeds, the occasional dust storm and some serious unforgiving sun and heat. You need some relief and after 200 miles of white lines and cigarette tinted windows and scratchy AM radio reception, you see the Santa Maria Hotel and decide it's time to take a break. The Santa Maria Hotel is a one-story joint with a partially working neon sign, run by an elderly couple who don't say much, but they give you a hospitable welcome and show you to your humble, but clean 200 sqft room, complete with wood-paneled walls, one lamp nightstand and air-condition window unit. You put your stuff down, take off your boots and wipe the sweat and dust off your face, pout a drink of whiskey and almost fall asleep sitting up in the bed with your clothes on. After 30 minutes, you awake feeling hungry and still a bit thirsty and remember the roadside bar/garage attached to the Santa Maria Hotel. The sun is disappearing orange and pink and dark blue sky is coming down. The neon sign is in its glory and the bug-whacker on the porch is the only noise besides a couple of 18 wheelers pulling into the parking lot. You begin to hear the pounding of a bass drum and some electric instruments tuning inside the aforementioned saloon, Hank's Garage and Mirage. Inside, Davis Raines and his crew are sound-checking and mingling with the locals and doing what they do every weekend...filling the gaps of life between ranching and relaxing. Hank is using Fast Orange Scrub, removing the grease from his hands and stocking the stainless steel, cattle trough with the coldest beer east of the Rockies. There is an autographed picture of Waylon Jennings behind the bar from where he stopped in on the way back to Phoenix back in '65, before the Outlaws. Welcome to the Santa Maria Hotel...

If you like Hank, Sr., Billie Joe Shaver, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, you're gonna hear all that and then some. This is some serious stripped down, raw, real country music that sounds as good bouncing off a tile floor in a concrete block building from a jukebox or on your $1000 speakers in your home entertainment system. You're gonna want chill, dance and maybe break something listening to this record. I've done all of the above. Nice job, Davis and Milan and crew!
