ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The first disc in the series ' Le Clavecin Franais', performed on the 1707 Nicolas Dumont harpsichord by Davitt Moroney, brings together the complete works of two of the finest composers of French keyboard music, Louis Marchand and Louis-Nicolas Clérambault. This recording features music belonging to the ‘middle’ period of French keyboard music, spanning the gap between the ‘First School’ of French harpsichordists (Jacques Champion de Chambonnieres, Louis Couperin and Henry d’Anglebert) and the later style epitomized by François Couperin.

Davitt Moroney is Professor of Music and University Organist at the University of California, Berkeley. Over the last twenty-five years he has made over fifty CDs, especially of music by Bach, Byrd, and various members of the Couperin family. His recordings have been awarded the French Grand Prix du Disque (1996), the German Preis der Deutschen Schallplatenkritik (2000), and three British Gramophone Awards (1986, 1991, 2000).

His many scholarly editions include the complete harpsichord works of Louis Marchand. His monograph 'Bach, An Extraordinary Life' — a short introduction to the composer’s life and works — was published by ABRSM Publishing in 2000 and has since been translated into many languages. In 1987 he was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre du mérite culturel by Prince Rainier of Monaco and, in 2000, Officier des arts et des lettres by the French government.

DUMAS

Not so good
"live" recording, slow and boring playing by Davitt Moroney (Marchand's specialist!)

DUMAS

Indispensable
In fact, this version is indispensable, the complete recordings of Clérambault being very rare. The playing of Moroney is baroque and well phrased, with in alternation slow or fast tempos and I thus re-aim at my first judgment. The a little " forced" sound could be improved by more aeration.
