ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Daya Lorin is a new contemporary gospel singer/songwriter who released her self-titled debut album, Daya Lorin, in April 2009. Daya brings many years of diligence in music ministry to the table having been a member of the FAMU Gospel Choir, a studio and performance background singer, and a praise and worship leader. She is also a songwriter, composing the original lyrics for her upcoming release and having penned songs for off-Broadway and gospel stage plays.

Daya is excited and grateful that God has chosen her to play a part in His master soul-winning plan. As she explains, “I know that He didn’t have to choose me to be where I am and go where I am going, but He did. So, I want to play my part because I know that I must work together with the rest of the body of Christ to effectively perform God’s work in the earth. To compel men to come to Christ through His love displayed in and through me.” And the love that God has for the world and the love relationship that Daya has with God is clearly expressed and deeply felt in the jazz/R&B inspired song, “You Are My God.” Daya says of the song, “It is one of my favorites because it is so personal to me. I wrote it one day when I was driving in my car and just communing with God. I wanted to tell him what he meant to me and the words just flowed out of me. Those who love God will identify with the intimacy of the song and those who don’t really know him yet will feel His love drawing them in.”

Growing up in the church, it is not surprising that part of Daya’s musical influence comes from that time. “Majesty,” a song about the glory of God, is a re-write of the song of the same name by Jack W. Hayford (1980). As Daya recalls, “I remember first hearing the song when I was about 14 years old. We had just started going to an integrated church and that was my first experience with Christian music. The song stayed with me as I got older and one day at work, God reminded me of it. I began to re-work the song. I kept the words of the chorus the same, but God had something else in mind for the rest of the song. The original was slow, but my version is up-beat, rhythmic and funky.”

Daya Lorin often draws on personal experiences for inspiration and this comes through powerfully on the song, "Return To You." Daya tells her story. “I was really going through. I was depressed and I didn’t even know it. It seemed like almost everything in my life was going wrong. My husband and I were having trouble paying bills, I was dealing with so-called friends who didn’t support me, and to top it all off, our car had been in an accident and we couldn’t drive ourselves or our kids anywhere! So, while I was waiting for the bus to get to work, God just opened my eyes and showed me how I had drifted so far from Him by being overtaken by my issues. I had to keep myself from crying at that bus stop in front of all those people. He gave me this song when I realized that He was right there all the time and I could always come to Him for peace and joy in the midst of it all.” “Return To You” is an emotionally and spiritually moving song that calls us all back to God.

Even though Daya creates her original songs, she knows that they all come through divine inspiration from God. As she explains, “I’m not that person who can just write a great song without God. It just doesn’t work that way for me. When I have tried writing my way, the songs may have been good but they weren’t anointed and that’s not my goal. So I do my best to let God speak through my songs, even when it’s not what I would normally say.” And that is exactly what Daya did when she wrote “Jeremiah 23.” It is truly a song from the pen of God as He uses the music to draw you in, but the lyrics to convict and correct. Daya says, “The song has a strong message, but it is obviously something that God wants to say.”

As Daya embarks on this journey she knows that this is just the beginning. “I am so excited to see where God takes me and to be used for His glory. Whether I sing before many or before few I want to express God’s love to the world and to use my gifts to help evangelize and make disciples. That’s my ultimate goal.” says Daya.
