Album Notes
On May 14th 2010, Barbara Dennerlein’s 25th CD "Bebabaloo" has been released. At the same time the artist is celebrating her thirty fifth anniversary as a jazz organist and composer. Swing, bebop, blues, soul, latin and funk - for Barbara there are no rigid boundaries, only fluid transitions. Audiences are captivated by her talent, her absolute mastery of the instrument, her taste, and not least, her warm personality. The B3, it would seem, is a seamless extension of herself. She understands better than anyone how to exploit her instrument to the full, creating a sound and a musical style that is unmistakably “Barbara Dennerlein”. Her brilliant technique has breathed new life into the venerable Hammond organ, an instrument long neglected in modern jazz. She can rightfully claim to have paved the way for the organ’s current renaissance in jazz.

This fascinating live CD was recorded at a highly celebrated concert in May 2009 at the Lokschuppen hall in Heidenheim/Germany. The unique atmosphere of this landmarked hall, the irrepressible spirit of the musicians and the enthusiastic audience made the concert evening a magic moment of Jazz. The intensive involvement of the organist with the entire recording process– she personally did all the editing and mixing in her personal recording studio with the painstaking and meticulous care she is known for –resulted in a recording that is a special treasure in both musical and technical sound aspects. The interaction between the three musicians (sounding like a quartet with Barbara’s mastery of the footpedals) is inspired and confident ...a musical dream-team. On her new CD the organist presents nine originals in a wide range of styles and takes the listener on a fascinating round-trip with her airline "Bebabaloo“.

Below you can read the liner notes. Further information is listed at the end of this article.

“Welcome aboard! Please fasten your seatbelts and put your ears in an upright position! Captain Barbara Dennerlein and her Bebab Crew wish you an enjoyable roundtrip over the jazz organist and composer's wide-ranging musical landscape. In the captain’s seat, Captain Barbara has the instruments under full control at all times, but her co-pilot, Peter Lehel, may take over occasionally, while our navigator, Marcel Gustke, charts a steady course and remains in close contact with ground control.

With Go For It the trio speeds down the runway and takes off. The steep flight path allows the crew and passengers to quickly gain the desired altitude and begin a gentle glide. Always Remember covers landscapes Captain Barbara has already visited twice in a quite different manner on her solo flights "In A Silent Mood" and "Spiritual Movement No. 2." Then it's time to reminisce about a pioneer, Jimmy Smith, with The Unforgettable.

Suddenly there's turbulence: it's up and down on I-797. No, as our pilot explains, this is not the model number of the airplane; rather it is the sober sounding bureaucratic name for a registration form the US authorities require musicians to submit if they want to perform there. After that, it's time for a breather until everything calms down and levels off a bit. Going Home is a lengthy loop that presses the onboard guests comfortably into their seats.

But now, what's this…. a dog aboard? It's Cleo, our Captain’s happy and playful four-legged companion, who is curiously exploring her surroundings. Now, however, it's time for Last Call. Please place your final orders. The piece of the same name encourages self reflection, reminding passengers that only he who remains true to himself achieves happiness and satisfaction.

Now it’s back to the point of origin in a breathtaking, high-speed low-altitude flight, and the runway is already in view. Our Captain, earns her well-known nickname “the Organ Tornado”, by proving the impossible is possible with Organ Boogie. With just one foot tap-dancing on the pedals, she plays boogie rhythm like a skilled Boogie pianist using all five fingers of his left hand. And all the others are rocking right along with her. In this playful mood the crew gets caught up in the fun and quickly decides to start out again. They head back into the wild blue yonder with Bebabaloo and perform a series of aerial and musical acrobatics – to the delight of the cheering passengers on board...”
