ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Guitarist Dennis Winge, who is based in upstate New York, has frequently led his own trios, performing everything from straight ahead jazz to rock, pop music and sacred chanting. However Just The One Of Us is something much different, a set of unaccompanied acoustic guitar solos.

Winge’s mastery of the guitar, which finds him playing not just solos and chords but, via occasional overdubs, a bass line at the same time, is a bit reminiscent of Joe Pass in how he makes his guitar sound like an orchestra. Unlike Pass, Winge is also a skilled composer and on this CD he performs 15 of his own originals.

When one thinks of a set of unaccompanied acoustic guitar solos, it is easy to imagine that this program would be dominated by ballads, but that is far from the truth. Dennis Winge performs at a wide variety of tempos and moods, giving Just The One Of Us more variety than one would expect.

Among the highlights are the cheerful and witty “Rocks In Your Shoes,” the bluesy strut “What We Do Sometimes,” his virtuosic display ion the uptempo “New York Inn,” the advanced chords that the guitarist gives the haunting “Lydia” and the soulfulness that he expresses on “Funkination.” Each selection has its own rewards including “Arabian Nights” (which definitely has a Mid-Eastern feel), the atmospheric “Liquid Universe,” the exciting uptempo blues “Blues Mayhem” and “I Wonder,” a likable tune with one of the strongest melodies of the program.

Even on the more laidback pieces, there are no slow moments on Just The One Of Us, with each selection containing its own subtle surprises and heated moments. This enjoyable set is easily recommended not only to lovers of the acoustic guitar but to anyone interested in creative improvised music.

- Scott Yanow, author of 11 books including The Great Jazz Guitarists

A full-time musician for over 10 years, Dennis Winge (also known as Damodar Das) was one of the most ubiquitous jazz and pop/rock/soul guitarists in the New York City area and played with musicians from bands such as BIlly Joel, Stan Getz, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Tony Bennett, Herbie Hancock. He performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Music Awards, and in many countries including Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Austria.

In 2010 he discovered 'bhakti' (devotional) yoga and began playing as a sideman at Kripalu, Omega, Ananda Ashram, etc. and was given the spiritual name Damodar Das ("servant of God"). Now, living in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, he regularly serves the community in the following musical contexts:

- Dennis Winge Jazz Ensemble

- Sacred Chanting

- "The Way" rock cover band

- "Mantra Magic" electric kirtan band

- solo performances

- studio/ songwriting services

Dennis has studied with some of NYC's finest guitarists including Jack Wilkins and Ron Parmentier. Some of the names he has played with in the rock world are Clifford Carter (Paul Simon, James Taylor), Jon Cobert (John Lennon), and Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys). In jazz he has worked with Bill Crow (Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan); Gene Bertoncini (Buddy Rich, Tony Bennett); Shunzo Ohno (Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock); Bob Meyer (Joe Lovano, John Abercrombie); David Budway (Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Regina Carter).

Winge has played events for New York politicians such as Rudolph Guiliani, Andrew Cuomo, and David Dinkins. As for off-Broadway productions, Dennis has played in the pit on Les Miserables, All Shook Up, Footloose, 13, Smokey Joe's Cafe, as well as portions of Rock of Ages, Wicked, Aida, All That Jazz, Jeckyl & Hyde, and In the Heights.
