Album Notes
Guitarist Denny Jiosa: DREAMS LIKE THIS

Every artist owns a desire to craft a project that most perfectly represents the substance of their God-given creativity. It becomes a very personal statement, and often, the work for which they are best–known. For Denny Jiosa, the release of Dreams Like This is a defining moment, the product not only of five years of work since his last release, but a faithful rendition of his musical influences and tastes. “THIS is the album I’ve always wanted to make!” says Jiosa, and it shows.

“I started writing for this project almost immediately after the completion of Body2Body,” Denny muses. “I love all the albums that I created for my previous record label, 1201 Music, but I had begun to realize that my musical interests had a wider range than the format I’d been writing for. My early influences stretched all the way from Wes Montgomery to Carlos Santana. That’s quite a distance. I wanted to make an album that captured all those things that made me want to play music in the first place.”

You’ll find those flavors here: straight-ahead jazz, Latin, smooth jazz and cinematic landscapes all unfold effortlessly giving us a glimpse of Denny’s prodigious musical vocabulary. He has an uncanny way of expressing deep emotions through the twists, turns and nuances of his seductive melodies. The song Chill Pill opens the CD with a funky contemporary groove with some surprises. Embracing the Fire sizzles with high-voltage Latin energy. I Am Roxane, which the enhanced CD also features as a full length video, smolders with provocative sensuality and you’ll want to savor the languorous The Glass Half Full like a glass of fine wine.

The centerpiece of this album, however, may be Denny’s lusciously smooth, masterfully soulful rendition of Sunny, which features the original composer and performer, Bobby Hebb contributing scat vocals. Denny recalls, “I’ve loved that song since first hearing it on the radio in 1966. A friend introduced me to Bobby, who agreed to come to my studio to listen to the version I’d recorded of his song. Not only did he give his overwhelming approval, he wanted to sing on the track! Nothing could’ve made an album about my musical dreams more complete.”

“God blessed me with a passion for music; I knew I was to play music from very early on… it was written on my heart.” When Denny looks inside, Dreams Like This encapsulates the music he finds written there.

About the Artist

In addition to his work as a producer, he is credited both as guitarist and recording engineer on several Grammy nominated releases. Dreams Like This once again finds Denny among friends, in the ranks of world–class musicians, including Chester Thompson (Genesis, Santana, Frank Zappa); Chris Kent (Take 6, Larry Carlton); Glen Caruba (Kirk Whalum, Glen Frey); Pat Coil (Pat Metheny, Michael McDonald), and fellow artists Dan Moretti and Rob McGaha.

Dirk Sutro, the author of JAZZ FOR DUMMIES states, “While some of the players are a little too smooth for my taste, some other artists in the contemporary jazz category make more challenging music.” He lists Denny Jiosa among his favorites in the company of such stellar musicians as
Fourplay, Spyro Gyra and Joe Sample.

JAZZTIMES MAGAZINE “Jiosa’s lithe melody touches both twinkling harmonies and darker chords, as if illustrating the complexity of humanity.”

“An incredible jazz ensemble and delightfully entertaining”
Fred Puglia,Decatur Celebration

“An electrifying show!” Peter Woolfolk,Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society

“Stunning performance...just fabulous!” Jane Olds,Clearwater Jazz Festival

“His performance was a great blend of contemporary and traditional jazz,
with improvising reminicint of Wes Montgomery! Music Boulevard

It\'s been six years since we\'re heard from Nashville-based guitarist Denny Jiosa, a former staple of smooth jazz radio with hits such as \"Lights of The City.\" His fresh new CD is the project he says he\'s always wanted to release. Although fans will instantly be familiar with Jiosa\'s fluid and smooth guitar style and knacks for hooks, he\'s also dived into Latin and a touch of straight-ahead with \"The Glass Half Full,\" \"Tranquillo\" and a tribute to hero Wes Montgomery called \"East of Montgomery.\"
There\'s even cinematic soundscape with the title track, its 7/4 time held down by drummer Chester Thompson.
The CD also offers a version of one of the most popular songs of all time: Bobby Hebb\'s \"Sunny\" from 1966. The twist here is that Jiosa corralled Hebb into singing on the song, although Hebb rightly realized that everyone\'s heard the familiar vocals so much he decided to scat along instead. Good move. With all that\'s going on with the CD, the best songs are still Jiosa\'s versions of the killer strikeout pitch, the haunting, emotional tracks like \"Midnight at the Wall\" and \"Wounded Warriors.\"
Dreams Like This is a beefy, compelling contemporary jazz CD that rises above most in the genre.

SONIC CANVAS RECORDS - A renowned musician in the world of mainstream and smooth jazz, guitarist Denny Jiosa can always be counted on to come up with a winning strategy. On his 2008 CD, Dreams Like This, Jiosa teams with a bunch of top players and the results make for a solid set of breezy guitar instrumentals. The follow up to his 2002 CD, Body2Body, 2008’s Dreams Like This features a fresh round of Jiosa originals with a definite highlight being a cover of the Bobby Hebb 1966 song classic, “Sunny” which features Hebb on cameo vocals. Commenting on working with an icon of ‘60s pop, Jiosa adds, ‘Bobby Hebb, the original artist and composer of “Sunny” came to my studio to listen to my version of his song. He gave me an overwhelming approval and even agreed to sing on the track!’ On Dreams Like This, Jiosa keeps his sunny side up on an album of albums that should have across the board appeal among guitar enthusiasts.

the varied tones and emotions laid down by Denny and friends here have given contemporary jazz (call it what you will...)a much needed boost in a genre that's become extremely watered down over the last few years. This man should be up for a Grammy and/or an AMA for this work.

the tones and emotions that Denny & friends have laid down here have infused contemporay jazz(call it what you will...)with a much needed boost in a genre that has been largely watered down over the last few years. Listening to Dreams Like This has also helped me revisit his earlier material. This man should be up for a long overdue Grammy with this new work. Thanks Denny.

Melody meets passion and virtuosity. . .what a concept!
I purchased this whole CD about a week ago. I can’t get it out of my player! For those of you who may not be aware, Denny Jiosa is arguably one of the top contemporary jazz guitarists in the world. It is mind numbing to experience the depth of the artistry displayed on this project. Straight-ahead Jazz, Latin (think Santana’s heat), Smooth Jazz (not the lame stuff on most smooth jazz stations) and cinematic landscapes all unfold effortlessly giving us a glimpse into Denny’s prodigious musical vocabulary. However, another thing I like is that he says more in 5 well-placed heartfelt notes than using 57 just because he could. Denny has an uncanny way of expressing deep emotions through the twists, turns and nuances of his seductive melodies. That’s one of the main things I like about the CD is that I actually ‘feel’ something when I’m listening to it!
“Chill Pill” opens the CD with a funky contemporary groove with some surprises. How did he ever get Bobby Hebb (the original artist for “Sunny”) to appear on the ultra-cool remake of that track with him? “I am Roxanne” is all about the sensual side of life (check out the smokin’ video of this song as the CD is enhanced). “East of Montgomery” is Denny’s homage to ‘Wes’ and is just plain fun with some scorching licks thrown in. “Wounded Warrior” tears me up every time I hear it. The melody is gorgeous and I can’t stop thinking about all the young men and women who have sacrificed so much for us. Sonically the CD’s high production values make it audiofile all the way. I own all of Denny’s discs and it has been fun to watch the growth from CD to CD. Each is amazing in its own way. Each has its own direction. With each new disc it is refreshing to see an artist stretch his chops to express his heart to us in new ways. So. . .do I like this CD? No - I LOVE it! Buy the full CD for its extras with a video interview and live footage. Buy this CD now! You won’t be sorry!

Denny Jiosa is a player of immense chops and fire, and while jazz dominates this album, Jiosa is also at home with R&B and pop,and cuts like "Forward Motion" give him a chance to show off his inventive soloing and strong use of melody.
Almost every cut here sticks. Jiosa is a master of the light funk that dominates smooth jazz, but on "I Am Roxane," his fiery playing overrides any mixed emotions about the genre. His soloing mixes single lines with octaves, and there's even fuzzed-out rock. Effortlessly, both from a compositional and playing standpoint, he then glides right back into octaves to wrap it up. He shows off a lovely ballad touch on several tunes, including "Wounded Warriors," with it's great melody and fine playing. Same goes for his chordal work on the lovely "The Glass Half Full." The CD has a bonus cut that pays homage to Wes Montgomery, from whom Jiosa takes a lot of cues; "East of Montgomery" is an old-school jazz piece and the connection is obvious. Like the latter-day Wes, he plays with fire, grace, and blazing technique.-- John Heidt

Thanks Denny! I like this new one as well as all your others CD. I got a lot of impressions from Sunny version - it's really great!
Dreams Like This became by my favorite albums on this week!
Once again -Thank You!

Take a CHILLPILL or two
Smooth Jazz isnt really my thing but I've heard Denny Jiosa live so I know his music can't be limited to one genre. This cd has it all, emotion and technique. What you would expect from Denny. Check out Denny's vocals on JUST THE THOUGHT OF YOU or original recording artist BOBBY HEBB doing scat on Denny's version of SUNNY. I AM ROXANNE is scary how much emotion is in this song. DENNY JIOSA has made another inspired collection.

From the first note played on the first track, "Chillpill", you will know that Denny Jiosa has set a new bar in contemporary jazz. "Chillpill" is high energy and draws the listener in from the first bar - you will find you will be inclined to move some part of your body while listening to this song. The album is a compilation of amazing songs that never leave you wanting to fast forward to the next track; each has its own personality and you feel like you are listening to a great line up of songs in a live performance venue.
My personal favorite is "Wounded Warrior". For those of you battling demons or heartache, this song could possibly heal you as it will touch your soul. It will take you to a better place.
Of course mention has to be made of the extraordinary arrangement of "Sunny", and the scat by Bobby Hebb - this simply makes the album worth purchasing by itself alone. What a treasure. "I Am Roxane" will leave you breathless and the video is amazing. But perhaps one of the most memorable and unexpected moments on the cd for me is to hear Denny on the vocals in "Just the Thought of You". What a voice and what an emotion-filled song. Kinda wish it didn't end!
This is a first rate cd with one of the most amazing and talented jazz guitarist and writer out there today, perhaps THE most talented jazz guitarist - I love every minute of it! Hope to see Denny on the Grammys with this one!
