ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Question: What do you get when you cross an engaging singer-songwriter-guitar player, a former steel drummer, and a social activist? Answer: Patti DeRosa!

What people are saying about Patti DeRosa...

"A honey-warm voice, clear and adventurous guitar work and incisive lyrics are all hallmarks of Patti’s work, and they are still only the tip of her talent iceberg. See this musician soon wherever you can and tell a friend. It'll be the best ‘I told you so’ that you’ve ever told”. Vance Gilbert

“She breaks out of her straight folk box and lets herself swing with smooth vocals made for the blues, easing naturally into the groove like melted butter...a cool drink on a hot summer’s night...” Kevan Breitinger, Indie-Music.com

"Patti DeRosa is a gem that stands out in the vast sea of singer/songwriters." Madalyn Sklar, GoGirlsMusic.com

“Patti DeRosa is a pro with a strong following who always brings out a bunch of fans. The real watchword in my mind is “connection”, and not every performer has it, but Patti connects big time. Her songwriting and lyrics focus on the human condition in a way that few can. I’m thinking of Bob Dylan here...” George LeBlanc, The Nameless Coffeehouse, Cambridge, MA

“...a fresh voice with a rich tone that delivers upbeat, heart-warming lyrics, supported by equally expressive guitar-playing. It is the rare performer who can, in one moment, address with insight and sensitivity the issue of racism...and in the next, demonstrate her witty sense of humor...”. Jim Watson, Coffeehouse Off the Square, Hingham, MA

“Her activist’s voice comes through in song...” The Boston Globe

“Genuine, heartfelt songs....Classic folk!” Club Passim, Cambridge, MA

“Patti’s stage presence is so natural it is like she was born there.”
National Guitar Workshop

Background:
Patti DeRosa started writing songs as soon as she got her first guitar when she was thirteen years old living in Long Island, NY. She and her guitar became inseparable, and she started performing in high school and throughout her college years in the New York area. She moved to Boston to pursue her graduate studies in social work and African American studies, and continued to be a frequent performer in the Boston and New York folk scene. At one point, she even put down her guitar for the steel drums, as her love of Caribbean music and culture lead her to join the Boston-based Metro Steel Orchestra, where she played "pan", sang, and even did the limbo.

Patti took a long hiatus from the music world to dedicate herself to her passion for social justice. She is the founder and president of ChangeWorks Consulting, which helps organizations and communities work towards diversity, social justice, and equity.

But the draw of her music was too compelling, and Patti has picked up her guitar and is back performing again. Her first CD, Paradise, was released in January 2005 and is receiving airplay on radio stations across the country.

She is a performing member of Indiegrrls, Go Girls Elite, SongsAlive Elite, Just Plain Folks, and the Rhode Island Songwriters Association. She has opened for artists such as Vance Gilbert, Lisa Moscatiello, and Terence Martin, and was selected to perform at the 2006 South Florida Folk Festival.

Folk rock delight !
DeRosa has a seasoned voice to tell her story like songs that range from comical to serious. Her lyrics are filled with imagery contrasting with minimal production. Her songs feature a few other instruments but it is mainly Patti and her Martin D-45. Each song has something to offer but I particularly liked the cutting commentary of 'Beside The Pretty Church' with its gentle guitars and DeRosa's crisp vocals. 'Paradise' has a snappy rhythm and soft rapping descriptions of a trip to Magen's Bay complete with some subtle island effects. Patti DeRosa brings warmth to her well written, meaningful music and Paradise is a folk rock delight!

A Lovely Invitation
Patti DeRosa is a gift for the joyful soul. Rarely is generosity of spirit so well combined with fine talent. You know when a singer smiles in the same way that you know that a speaker does even when you cannot see him or her. Patti relies on that smile, as well as on irony and keen observation to convey strong political will and real moral
authority where many a less deft songwriter has tripped getting on and off the soapbox. She is pure and direct without ever being overly simple or austere.

When someone conveys comfort with her platform and integration of mission and invites you to join, please go along. You will not be disappointed ("Paradise"). Capacity for reflection ("Choices" and "When I Had My Midlife Crisis"), and creative enthusiasm abound. Even
the rueful recounting of a misdirected romance ("Just by the Sound of Her Voice") stays with the attention to detail and vagaries of loss while avoiding bitterness. Humor abounds as well--do _not_ miss the bonus track, or it will come and find you on its own.

Music for your mind and soul
Paradise keeps it honest and real. Rarely do I hear songs coming directly from my own experience. There's a validation of life, choices and love. She asks questions and names truth around deep challenging places for us. And as if that's not enough, this CD is fun and makes you laugh and smile. Absolutely Wonderful!

Patti’s new album goes down easily!
Patti’s new album goes down easily! I’ve already enjoyed listening to it several times. She writes about what she knows – her powerful song about discrimination and her more light-hearted tunes about mid-life crises and big-butt blues! Her voice has a jazzy pop feel and is well supported by her accomplished guitar accompaniment. She incorporates various musical forms in her writing and seems to be most at home with a jazzy or bluesy style which suits her singing and playing perfectly!

Paradise is Heaven to Listen To!!
Patti DeRosa's beautiful cd shows off her fine songwriting talent and lovely voice. Her songs range from the touching (Lifetime Love - about her husband and God Spare Life - about her late mother-in-law) to topical subjects (Grease on My Wheels; a subtle expose on racism) to introspection done with humor (When I Had My Midlife Crisis - in which she talks about splurging on a fancy Martin guitar).
The tropical atmosphere of some of her melodies reminds me of a female Jimmy Buffett, only with an edge.
This is a cd I plan on listening to quite often. It's a wonderful accomplishment for this artist.

Paradise is a delightful CD, the product of an artist who has lived fully, and well. Patti has a rich, seasoned voice, to match her range of life experiences. Her lyrics lift and enlighten, and the melodies are, well, pure paradise! I won't tire of listening, and the bonus track is a REAL bonus.

Won't be long before she makes it big.....
Patti DeRosa's music resonates with me deeply and touches my soul. She has an easy voice to listen to that is a balance between folksy and gutteral sexy. This includes the last bonus song, "The Big Butt blues." Her depth makes for rich songs.

This CD is amazing in it's power to cause one to reflect
Great lyrics and instrumentation in a pleasing vocal stlye. Reminiscent of the great"story songs"that captivate with their ability to include you in the unfolding story. A must listen for those with a sense of humor,a social conscience, and the desire to go below the surface.
