ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Derroll Adams (Portland, Oregon Nov. 27, 1925 – Antwerp, Belgium Feb. 6, 2000) .
grew up during the Depression years. His mother gave him his first 5-string banjo in 1945 for his 20th birthday. Derroll played the up-picking style with a gentle touch. Pete Seeger was a big influence and also one of Derroll’s heroes. In 1954 he met guitarist and singer Ramblin'Jack Elliott in Topanga Canyon ( Los Angeles). They teamed up till Jack went to Europe and reunited again in London in 1957. Derroll and Jack travelled all over Europe and recorded some leading classic folk albums The Rambling Boys (1957), Roll On Buddy (1963), and Folkland Songs and Riding in Folkland (1966). Derroll chose to stay in Europe and lived in Belgium for the rest of his life. He recorded six more albums. This CD features two of Derroll’s own songs: The Valley and Portland Town. This anti-war song was written in 1953 during the Korean war and has been recorded by many artists. Live in Haarlem 1977 can be considered his best recorded work since his days with Elliott and is a fine tribute to this 5-string banjo player, singer-songwriter, poet, storyteller and painter.
