Album Notes

Born and raised in the USA, Tanuja Desai Hidier is a writer/singer-songwriter now based in London.

She is a recipient of the James Jones First Novel Fellowship and her short stories have been included in numerous anthologies. Her pioneering novel, Born Confused — the first-ever South Asian American coming of age novel, set in the context of New York City's bhangra/underground club scene the summer aspiring photographer heroine Dimple Lala turns seventeen — was named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults and became a landmark work. USA Today commended it as “compelling and witty…gives voice to a new generation of Americans…a rare and daring portrayal.” In starred reviews, Publishers Weekly praised it as “absorbing and intoxicating…sure to leave a lasting impression,” and Kirkus called it “a breathtaking experience.”

Born Confused was recently hailed by Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone as one of the best young adult novels of all time. Its long-anticipated sequel, Bombay Blues, deemed “a journey worth making” in a starred Kirkus review, explores everything this generation faces today, with a heady mix of uncertainty and determination, despair and inspiration, haunting loss and revelatory love.

When We Were Twins, Desai Hidier’s album of original songs based on Born Confused, was featured in Wired Magazine for being the first-ever “booktrack.” Wired deemed it "reminiscent of Alanis Morissette...[the music] reflects the clash of styles, sounds, and influences inherent to cultural assimilation and urban living." Bombay Spleen, her booktrack album of original songs linked to Bombay Blues, will be released in summer 2014. Tanuja is also working on a ‘chantscape’: a film/video adaptation of the music of Bombay Spleen.

LOVE this MUSIC !!!!
First I read the book BC. I laughed. I cried. Then someone I know(and LOVE)turned me on to the music. I have listened to it so many times that my kids know the words. We sing along in the car. Tanuja has such a beautiful voice!! I would love to hear it live!! Love DeeDee (bearly older sister)

When We Were Twins kind of dissapionted me because I thought that it would bring a little bit of more indian music into the mix, but overall the lyrics and the emotions were right on but the music did not convince me much.Tanuja's voice was great and really real. I loved the book though it was great!! The CD I think didn't capture all of the stuff that happened in the book...

An amazing cd of inspiration.
When We Were Twins was a magical CD that incorporated a lot of the emotions that were developed in Born Confused. Listening to the songs was like listening to words of wisdom from an older sister. With meaningful lyrics, all the themes of life were expressed in the songs-- friendship, love, and self-discovery.

Totally cool
Top notch to Beutiful eyed Tanuja Desai Hidier. From one author to another, this woman knows her metaphors, the cd was just what I ecxpected and just what i was looking for. This has everything you could want in a cd, and then some.
I've read the book born confused about five times now, and listened to her cd a countless number of times, keep up the good work! I'll be searching for more work from this author!

Bought this for my teenage daughter, who had read the book Born Confused. She loved it.

Well, I thought born confused was a great book, but when I heard a cd was coming out based on the novel, I didn't know what to make of it. I thought it would be kinda crappy, and would mess up the greatness of the book. I was wrong! The cd is absolutely fantastic, from start to finish! I was a little relucant at first, but after the first track i was hooked. They cd isn't cheesy, and over produced like I thought it would be. Instead it is raw and edgy, and the songs really do go w/ the theme of the book!
Tanuja's voice is so real and fitting, that you think she's right in the room w/ you! The lyrics are great, and the band plays their instruments well.
This CD might not be a must buy, but it is definetly worth checking out!

When I read Tanuja's book Born Confused I was inspired. I logged onto her website and clicked to this link. When I first listened to the songs, I thought they were kindof weird, but after I listened to the lyrics, I was completely hooked. I thought I was hypnotized or something. Tanuja's voice drifted me into a state of wonder and intensity. Her song When We Were Twins made me very emotional. I would have to rate that song a 10 out of 10. This CD is awesome.

Expect the Unexpected
Although I'm not quite sure what I expected, When We Were Twins was still different from what I thought it would be like. I guess considering how much Indian music was mentioned in the book, I thought there might be some bhangra or something similar in the CD. I was a bit surprised when it turned out to be more folk-based music. (Not that I'm complaining.) In general, it still matched the tone and feel of the book fairly well. At first, it took me a while to decide if I liked it or not, but now I don't regret getting it. Plus, it was really awesome to hear Tanuja's physical voice, instead of just her "writing voice." The songs were quite inspiring, just like the book. It really helps you to get into a good mood.

After reading the book, I wasnt sure if the CD would match the quality of the book. It turns out that it didnt reach the true poetry that i thought the book contained and I was surprised not to hear a more Indian influence.

The best music I have heard in a long time!
Loving the CD!! The music is so incredibly funky and I've already emailed T about my fave songs from the album. Im always blasting this cd on my stero so everyone in my family listens to it too!! The music has a no doubt (the gwen steffani band) vibe about it crossed between jon bon jovi, madonna and pink in a unique and awesome way!! Well done T and thanks for some fantastic listening material! It's hard to come by these days. Love Alka xx
