Album Notes
We are proud to present our second album, "Lonjohns, Boots, and a Belt. Ten new songs of that weird acoustic ragtime/country/punk thing you have come to know and love. We have more finger-picking wizardry (at least WE like to think so!), more doghouse bass, plus our new friends the tenor banjo and the musical saw. All that put together makes for what we think is a well rounded and pretty darn good album. Give it a listen!

Mixing styles from the ragtime and country music of the twenties and thirties to the rock and roll and punk music of their adolescence, The Devil Makes Three pushes the boundaries of acoustic music. Citing influences as varied as Steve Earle, the Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Jug Band, and Django Reinhardt, the band combines tight vocal harmonies with idiot-savant finger style guitar to create an exciting and original sound.
Since releasing their first album in 2002, the band has played to capacity crowds up and down the West Coast, and has shared bills with Robert Earl Keen, Paul Thorn, Drag The River and Lucero.
Fast friends since their childhood in rural Vermont, Pete Bernhard (guitar), Lucia Turino (upright bass), and Cooper McBean (guitar, tenor banjo) are currently based in Santa Cruz, CA where they enjoy regular airplay on local radio stations KPIG 107.5, KKUP 91.5, and many others nationwide. The band is currently working on their second full-length album, and is planning to tour extensively over the coming months.

If you like The Devil Makes Three Pete Bernhard also has a solo album for sale on cdbaby. cdbaby.com/cd/bernhard.

"This acoustic trio bridge different musical eras without the camp common in nostalgic sounds, nor do they coast on clichés. Soulful roots music instead of 10 carefully calculated reproductions of the past, The Devil Makes Three is a deviant middle finger to all Johnny-come-lately bluegrass listeners."
-Punk Planet #56

"The songwriting is at times as captivating as a good ghost story told around a campfire, with Bernhard's persona straddling the line between the grand tradition of the gritty, whiskey-swilling depressives of yore and your modern day barfly, with a scratchy, scrappy vocal style."
-Mike Connor, Santa Cruz Metro

" The group's music cuts a wide swath that touches everyone from their hipster contemporaries to grannies here and yon.... It's folk, but a mean kind of jug-band folk, spiked with whiskey and dust."
-Wallace Baine, Santa Cruz Sentinel

This is what nickel creek could sound like if they had a soul.

If you like bluegrass you must listen to this
Longjohns, Boots, and a Belt is great bluegrass music that doesn't try hard to be authentic. It just is. I can't recommend this enough.

Folk rock with a dash of rag...I LOVE IT!
This is the CD I pop in when I climb in the car for the drive to work. It just makes me **smile**.

It's kind of folk rock with a dash of rag...I LOVE IT! They also have this jazzy sort of sound at times. This music is addictive. The sound feels up close, honest and real. Fantastic musicians with great vocals. What a great find and I'm glad to recommend it to anyone. Not a lot of CDs that just make me feel this good!

wonderful CDs and always fun when Nate plays a favorite
I have played this one over and over. I am not generally a country, bluegrass or whatever other category it fits into listener, but I love this CD and I will continue to suggest that my friends give it a listen. Thanks for the wonderful musical performances.

sounds like music
not to many things these days sound like anything, these folks fit into the only genre they belong: the whiskey drinking travelin' kids they seem to be otherwise they are a group of posers bound for failure we will see wont we good luck much respect from a blues boy just north of chicago

Unbelievable Album
this is UNBELIEVABLE. i got the CD a year ago, and could not stop listening to it for long enough to write this review. WONDERFUL music. i recommend "Judgement Day"...

This music is so exciting i had to get both Devil Makes Three cds delivered in France. Thanks to The Devil Makes Three, thanks to CD Baby!

Irresistable dance-around-the-room music
Think Camper van Beethoven without drums, add in a healthy splash of Leon Redbone cool, pour in whiskey (old number 7) until the bottle is empty, and you still will only have a glimpse of what these guys sound like. This is one of those albums it is hard to imagine anybody not liking. I loathe country and have little patience for bluegrass, but Devil Makes Three effortlessly transcends those genres with simple toe-tapping feel-good wry-twist songs that are just plain Damn Good Songs. Check 'em out!

The songs won't leave your head for days
Got this album as a gift for Xmas 04 and by the second listen-through, knew it was the best thing I'd heard in years. A really immaculate, crisp recording with Dylan-quality ballad lyrics coming at you at paces from quick to cheetah-on-amphetemines. Great guitar and banjo pickin', and lyrics that are funny, memorable, and play tag-team taking your mind over one after another. Never Learn and Sweeping were the first to grab my notice, but just about every song has taken my mental i-pod over in the last few weeks. Not to be missed.
