Album Notes
The texts from these songs are selections from meditations in Finding Each Other In Judaism by Harold M. Schulweis. Rabbi Schulweis revitalizes rites of passage as sacred moments in our lives by using simple, clear, and beautiful language to focus us to a higher awareness. In reading them, I found a personal, intimate quality, as if one person is speaking to another with deep love, compassion, and awareness. That is why I chose to set the texts as arts songs, the most intimate form of chamber music, in the tradition of Schubert or Schumann, writing music that is both lyrical and tonal.

Sacred Transitions meditates on the four primary life passages—birth, marriage, sickness/age, and death. The songs of the four parts are as follows:

Pt. 1 Birth—From Where Did You Come?, Touch My Heart, Whose Am I?
Pt. 2 Marriage—Mirror Eyes, Yet
Pt. 3 Sickness/Age—Playing With Three Strings
Pt. 4 Death—Holding On And Letting Go, It Is Never Too Late
