Album Notes
Composer and recording artist Diane Bardwell, along with her husband, critically acclaimed author Robert Augustus Masters, has created O BREATHE US DEEP, featuring genre-transcending music that reveals, explores, and celebrates our deepest dimensions with passion and grace. Diane brings her remarkably rich voice to each song, singing with a full-blooded, heartfelt fluidity unburdened by sentimentality. Complementing her voice are the eloquent lyrics, based on poetry written by Robert. Some songs are devotional, some are raw; some soar, some sing and bleed; but all are presented in the spirit of awakening to who and what we truly are.

O BREATHE US DEEP is an eclectic mix of deeply spiritual (but not New Age nor conventionally religious) music that is as evocative as it is original. What connects its eight songs is not a particular style (a wide range of styles is used, from ballads to Celtic to Native American to hard-driving), but rather the poetically-articulated embracing and living of a deeper life, a life in which body, mind, emotions, and spirituality function as a natural integrated whole.
"The music in each of these beautiful songs takes my breath away. The soul and emotional depth expressed through both the lyrics and Diane's magical voice moves me to tears. I relate to every feeling in every song. Thank you for this amazing and heart-felt gift." - Pamala Oslie, author of LOVE COLORS and MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE
When Diane Bardwell sings, her voice wends its way into your heart. Like a healing elixir, it instills courage; it helps you to gather your forces and move again and again toward the expression of your best self. It repairs wounds that need mending. It allows you to breathe easy and free. Like some ancient, primordial embrace, the quality and depth of sound that comes from deep within her, helps you to feel like everything — whatever it is — will be all right. It is wonderful too, to watch her perform, to see the joy she feels in doing what she knows she was put on earth to do. Watta girl!!!!

"One day in late March 2005, I came across the website of Robert Augustus Masters, and there began looking at descriptions of his books. I noticed that he also posted his poetry on his site; when I read his poems, particularly one called Sacred Hymn, I literally gasped and touched my heart. With total certainty, I realized that I knew the music for these “poems,” which I felt were meant to be lyrics for songs.

And so I emailed Robert to ask if he would allow me to try composing music for them, and he consented. After 3 weeks of talking on the phone, consulting about the songs and having many conversations about everything else imaginable, Robert came to where I was living in California to meet me and hear Sacred Hymn during a concert I was giving. Our connection was extremely easy, deep, and natural right from the start. That was the beginning of our co-creative relationship, working partnership and, since April 2, 2006, our marriage!

The lyrics for each song on the CD are Robert’s, and the music is mine, but the entire CD is ours to share. May you hear it in the spirit in which it was created."

Diane grew up singing three-part harmony with her sisters. Her diverse background includes choir and madrigals, folk, piano, bass, guitar and Irish harp. She has been composing and performing professionally since 1974, playing and singing all kinds of music from rock to Celtic to children's songs. From 1997 through 2001 Diane sang and played harp in the Celtic duo Almost Avalon. She and Barbara Arnett, on silver flute and tin whistle, performed at many weddings and concerts in Virginia.

From 1999 through 2003 Diane performed nationally at folk festivals and concerts with Paul Reisler, founder of “Trapezoid.” Diane also assisted Paul in songwriting workshops for children, that show kids that they can be the creators, and not just the consumers, of music. An accomplished songwriter herself, Diane has also sat in on backup vocals for such well-known songwriters as Tom Paxton, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Steve Seskin, and Gary Nicholson.

Diane’s recording career includes two albums with the band Anahata, “Journey's Goal” and “Live at La Paloma,” as well as the soundtrack for the movie “Harmony Within.” With Timmaris McDowell, Diane recorded “Listen and Follow” and “For a Child's Heart,” a collection of original non-denominational devotional songs which has been a popular children's album for 25 years. She sang all vocals on Alex Jones’ albums, “Awaker of Hearts” and “Portrait” (on which she wrote half the songs) and was the vocalist for Erik Fehr’s children's album, “Harry the Troll.” Diane's lead and backup vocals shine on the award-winning “Tidal Wave of Song,” an album of songs co-written with children that was released in 2001 (see www.kidpanalley.org).

O Breathe Us Deep
Dianes new CD is therapy in of itself. I was listening on my way to work and it blew me away. Best CD I have heard in a very long time. In fact, I have never heard anything like it. Totally amazing. If you can't make one of Robert Augustus Masters' sessions, get this CD. All I can say is that its having a healing effect on me that I have never experienced from any music before. This music is loaded with powerful stuff. I have heard her perform live also, her voice fills a room (without the need of amplification), she's a natural. These two make an impressive couple.
