Diane Taraz takes her vivacious voice into new territory, covering the classics of American song. She ranges from lovelorn to joyful to downright silly, backed by a tight combo of Mike Duke on guitar, Peter Tillotson on bass, Steve Langone on drums, Eric Kilburn on mandolin, and jazz/folk legend Billy Novick on clarinet.
Engineer Eric Kilburn captured this lightning in a bottle in one long, live session at his Wellspring Sound studio, which has hosted such artists as Grammy-winner Esperanza Spalding. In mastering, Eric sent the tracks through an analog system to add the full, lush sound of classic vinyl.
Diane's voice varies to fit the mood of each song -- bluesy on "Since I Fell For You" and "Summertime" -- playful on "Let's Do It!" and "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" -- moody on "My Buddy" and "Autumn Leaves." Her definitive arrangement of "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?" includes rapid-fire recitations of 29 of brands of gum. She sings three songs in French, including "La vie en rose" and "Stardust."
This superb collection of all-time favorites honors these brilliant melodies and lyrics with the loving touch of master musicians.
