Album Notes
New York Daily News
Dick Summer is a story teller.

From the Publisher
The night is full of staring faces, strange sounds, and unprotected touches. NIGHT CONNECTIONS is a collection of sixteen stories, mostly collected from listeners to Dick Summer's middle of the night radio program on NBC Radio. They are very short connections. But they will stay with you for as long as you stay with them. Connections are fragile. It is only touching you that gives them life.

From the Author
The people in these NIGHT CONNECTIONS got to me. Most of them are real flesh and blood people. Some of them felt startlingly real to me when I met them in my imagination. I fly a small airplane. At night, I can't help but think about what is going on down on the ground...in those homes, and parks, and cars that are just lights from where I sit. People are loving, earning each other's trust, taking each other's lives, laughing, writing last letters, being born, leaving, and some...are connecting with each other for the first time. Sometimes the first time is the only time. I can't tell you how much I have loved the connection with them. I hope they will also get to you.

About the Author
Dick Summer is a poet, a pilot, a hypnotist and a nationally known radio and tv broadcaster. His five "Lovin Touch" books were published by Random House and Bantam Books.

A must listen..., June 11, 2003
Reviewer: Alan J Balkin from Paris, France
After finishing listening to Dick Summer's "Night Connections" I could not help wonder why this was so good. What is it that this guy has that allows him to convey our inner strengths, weaknessess, our trumphs and our foibles. For one, Dick Summer "gets it." He is a master of detail. Nothing goes unnoticed nor untold. He does not spare us any of the details of who we are, and what we may think. The funny thing is that not just anyone can masterfully "truthspeak" like Dick Summer does in "Night Connections". He says what most of us have thought, but may only have whispered to ourselves. As a long time fan of his, I must say that even if you are not, you should certainly do yourself the favor of getting "Night Connections" and hear for yourself, what you might have been thinking!

Some of you will understand this, it certainly is "mouth verses ear"!!

Dick Summer... Master Storyteller, May 28, 2003
Reviewer: Dick Stadlen from Cedar Rapids, IA USA
Dick Summer is a master storyteller and a keen observer of the human condition. "Night Connections" is a collection of vignettes about love: both good and bad. We've all been there... or perhaps just wanted to be there. The greatest moments of our lives; the times we'd just as soon forget; the encounters we only dream about. "Night Connections" captures them all in storylines that tug at our heart strings one moment... then bring a smile to our face the next.

Whether or not you've experienced the individual scenarios, you can certainly identify with them. "Night Connections" is a great escape for anyone who's ever been in love, regardless of the outcome.

A Feast for the Heart
NIGHT CONNECTIONS is a verbal smorgesbord for the mind and heart. Each delectable verbal entree has been carefully prepared, seasoned and served by Dick Summer, a longtime DJ and storyteller with an amazing voice. Each story is flavored with some aspect of that most basic of human needs: to connect with another human being. You'll taste love, longing, lust, despair, humor, joy, regret, loyalty, warmth, loss, wonder and hope, especially hope. You'll come away surprisingly satisfied. So sit back, get comfortable and... bon appetit!

A believable and personally relatable blend of poetry and prose
Night Connections is a stunningly crafted selection of stories about people navigating their love relationships. The vignettes that comprise it represent the places where imagination decorates memory, character intersects circumstance--- so believable and personally relatable is each. In so many of the stories, it's as though Dick Summer is recounting our own intimate experiences, but in a narrative style that celebrates rather than exposes them.

The strength and beauty of this personal audio is in the brevity and yet descriptiveness of the vignettes. Each scenario is a meticulously constructed and rippingly lean sketch of people in their situations. But don't equate the brevity of the pieces in Night Connections with anything like sparseness. Nothing is lacking here. The studies are profiled generously, but economically, in descriptive language and potent imagery that paints poems, that shares people's circumstances and histories as biographical affirmations. And Summer does this while injecting each story with a sense of currency, a sense that these circumstances are happening right now. He balances the past and present tenses in a way that make stories relevant. By addressing his listeners in the second person pronoun, we are allowed to feel that it is we who are the subject of each story. He is talking as much to us as about us. And that makes each story a personal gift, whether it's our story or not. The sometimes explicit, sometimes implicit feeling of inquiry infusing each vignette--- the what-if's and maybe's of love relationships--- invites us to ponder how things otherwise might have turned out. The inclusion of that kind of wondering captures a human characteristic we all share in loving and in reflecting on loving.

Night Connections is a beautiful and seamless blend of poetry and prose, one that features dozens of memorably evocative lines that make one wish that he'd thought them up first. Each story ends with one of these powerhouses--- strings of parting words that steal a breath, nudge a memory, take pause to reflect, and give cause to connect. This is the hallmark of truly great writing.
