RECORD NOTES

Along the Road had its origins in 2012 as I sat and cried watching the documentary “Marley.” I was overwhelmed that a songwriting talent like Bob could be lost to the world so young, with so many songs not yet put down. And there were so many others, too ... Cat Stevens had walked away; Stevie Ray gone by accident; Otis Reading to a gunshot; and far too many to overdose. It made me sad that the world would never hear all the songs that they should have finished.

And after I’d cried that out, the voice in my head was there to remind me - I was neglecting the songs, too. I had always written songs; I’d always loved songwriting, but I’d pretty much given up on ever letting anyone hear the songs. Too scary; too hard; too old; too clueless about how to get them done well. That was the start of this road: I wanted to honor the songs enough to put them out properly.

At that point, I knew nothing about professional recording; I knew few musicians. But I had some songs, and I just started to reach out. Robert McFreshington at the FREEstate workshop gave me my first platform for my originals; Matt Ascione saw something when we were just hometown dads, and taught me everything I now know about the recording process (and a lot about playing guitar). Without his patient teaching and otherworldly playing this would have never been done. And of course my two steadiest fans (and critics) my wife Stef and mom Carolyn. And later, as the recording was almost done, Kevin Pezzutti showed up, liked what he heard and put together The Truth. I cherish my time with the band, I am so thankful that they give me the confidence and backing to play the songs for a crowd.

The Songs:
Table Set for Two
The song from the day I pulled into my driveway 2 hours early from work, unannounced. I didn’t mean for it to be a surprise.
Walked in from the road, to a house that was our home
there’s a table set for two but that’s not really something like what you’d do, and the candles’re all burned down and there’s dishes all around
as I step up to the stairs there’s a strange somethin’ in the air
and I walked up to the second floor put my hand up on the
bedroom door and there I pause as I can’t escape the
thought that
Chorus
Ahhh .... I saw a table set for two ahhhh ... and its not for me and you
Ahhhh ... its a table set for two.
An if I’d had a gun, I don’t know what I woulda done,
it was bad enough as it was, I flipped the lights, said if you value your life
you gotta leave out on the run, and I didn’t want to see what was ’neath the sheets,
but I couldn’t tear my eyes away I’ll never forget, and I’ll never forgive,
like a brand that I carry to the end of my days
An I don’t . remember him leaving; don’t think I watched him run
An I don’t . remember my grieving; just let the darkness come
Chorus, stopSolo,
Took our vows, exchanged rings, that all changed when I walked in

An you had another man n my house, in my bed, I didn't want it t be true
You chose this life, you can live in your lies, but get out, I'm done with you
An I will rise from the ashes and fires and walk away a better man
I may be down, I may be out, but I’ll get up and I’ll fight again.
An I don’t remember her leaving, don’t think that I watched her run
Don’t remember my grieving, just let the darkness come
Chorus

The River
My ode to the temple that is the lowlands and flowing water.
I grow stronger by the river side

There's a time by the banks of the river
when the sun drops down behind the pines
when I see clear now this gift I've been given
I see clearly now this life of mine
Chorus
Take me down, to the river
Take me down, to the banks by the river side
though I am down to t last strength I been given
I grow stronger there by the river side

There's a tree down by the old muddy river
old as the earth tall as the sky
sometimes I wish for the fate he's been given
to stand there quiet by the river side
Chorus
Bridge
An if it all ends here today
Take me to the river and pick up my guitar and play
We’ll let the wind and the water wash us all away
Wash us all away
Chorus, Chorus, 1/2 Chorus, End

I am Graced
I wrote the beginnings of this song a long time ago. A young man, newly married. It found new life when Matt said “you should write a bridge.” It counterpoints Croce’s Time in a Bottle - I’ll take the gray hair and real life. The age is the price of happiness.
It is never the same, the past it is gone
For each minute that passes now baby, another one comes
there is something special between us, that I can’t name
I know when I get home, there’s a smile on my face

For my days with you, grow better each one
each day gone is replaced
My days with you, grow better each one
With each day gone, I am graced

If I could choose, a time to freeze and hold
I’d never trade that now baby, for us growing old
Not the first night I spent in your arms, oh no way
Not or wedding or honeymoon baby, I wouldn’t trade
CHORUS,
bridge
I am graced, I am graced, I am graced.
Graced like the sun in the morning it comes
And it shines on your beautiful face
graced like our children they’re growin I know it
and like you they always amaze
I am graced, I am graced .... chorus

Along the Road She Comes
A send up for the warmth of a lover who will accept you as you are, and bring light to your darkness.
I woke to find it was long into the day
my head it hurt, the past was kind of gray
just a lonely soul, in messy kinda state
when along the road she comes
yeah along the road she comes
And the suns in her hair and a smile on her face
she knows the things there’s no need t say to me
the past is past, the future is our way
yeah along the road she comes
yeah along the road she comes
Chorus
And I find my doubts all come slippin in
when the light is gone from the day
And I find my doubts come creepin in
but the light comes when she walks my way

And this time, I’m not gonna let her go
I learned some things in the darkness and the cold
Its a good woman that can lighten up the load
When along the road she comes
Along the road, she comes
chorus, bridge
But I wake to find a spark in me,
that rises like the sun
I wake to find a spark in me, that rises (HOLD)
Rises yeah
solo verse 4, quieter
Now I can look back, we loved until we’re old
Gone past the silver, and on to the gold
Its a good woman, who lightens up your soul
When along the road she comes
along the road she comes
Fade out on ...
Nah, nah nah .... (along, along along the road)

When you walked back in I said please hold me
and swore I’d never break again
ever since the day, you came walking back my way
we’ve been lovers and we’ve been best friends.

Flag On A Hill
I started this song in 2014, when I was so troubled about the how we, as citizens, talked about patriotism, our constitution and our country. It became that much more poignant as time progressed, and it was right on time when we recorded in 2017.

There's a flag on a hill in my hometown
Next to the statue of George Washington
And it flies for ideas that he fought for and won
ideas that still hold today

One person one vote, the law above all
A united defense that we never let fall
And everyone with a chance to answer their call
No royals or church of the state
chorus
We can’t just take this for granted
the peace and the strength must be defended
its the best that there’s been, best on the planet
(Land of the free, best on the planet)
and we, we must defend her still
like a flag on a hill.
(Like a flag on a hill x3) (2nd chorus and on)

The way we must go is lit by sciences’ light
children’s education, a commitment to rights
Peace when we're able, but willing to fight
Those are American ways

bridge
An I know that mistakes they were made
Segregation, suffrage, Indians and slaves
But there’s been real progress that’s led to today
and our flag it still leads the way
Chorus

There's a flag on a hill in my hometown
Next to the statue of George Washington
And it flies for ideas, fought for and won
ideas that still hold today
