Album Notes
You may have heard of D.J. Bonebrake as the drummer of the influential Los Angeles band X.
But D.J. has always cultivated a mallet-oriented love-and reverence-for jazz. In his 30-plus years in the music industry he has played vibraphone and marimba for musicians like Rickie Lee Jones and Elliot Caine, contributed music for film and TV, and given live solo performances. In 2002, his jazz group Orchestra Superstring released a CD of Latin-influenced, hypnotic jazz music, and in 2006, DJ went to Europe as vibraphonist for Steven Bernstein’s Hollywood Diaspora tour. This year the Bonebrake Syncopators, a five-piece group including lap steel guitar, electric guitar and vibraphone released a CD, ‘That Da Da Strain’, honoring the classics of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s with fresh authenticity. D.J.’s first album of original compositions, “The Other Outside”, features veteran Los Angeles musicians Danny Frankel on drums and Paul Eckman on bass, and showcases Bonebrake as composer, arranger, and vibraphonist.

Dig That Vibe!
D.J. Bonebrake is one of the finest drummer/percussionist I know.
And you can hear how Danny and Paul are perfectly in tune with D.J..
THE OTHER OUTSIDE is a place I know well!
It's good to see someone finally showing us proof it exists.
I Look forward to the next side!
What am I doing? Just keeping time and filling when necessary.

A gentle, evocative, aural escape exhibiting great musical mastery
Many must know DJ Bonebrake as the intense drummer for the seminal Punk band X. Who knew that he was a gifted vibraphonist and improviser, a true master of polyrhythms and an composer able to create sonorous images? Not many rock drummers are able to exhibit this level of diversity. Of course, a great drummer would insist on having an outstanding rhythm section backing him up! Danny Frankel on drums and double-bassist Paul Eckman fill up the potential sparseness of the trio setting with sonic richness and subtle, yet tight ensemble kicks, not with unnecessary busy work.
This disc reminds me of Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet at times, then Tiki Exotica king Robert Drasnin the next. It's an inviting sound and a gentle, evocative, aural escape.
