Album Notes
"DK Tonight" by David "DK" Krapes (2013)
David "DK" Krapes is a man with varied interests. As a vocalist, he's been in many bands since the early 70’s. Starting in the Orange County, California area, DK fronted the 10-piece band DARK HORSE when he met a sax player named Tom Saviano who was in a rival band called CHURCHILL. This friendship would come full circle over 30 years later... DK went on to follow his musical pursuits performing in a variety of venues and touring through the years. Interestingly enough, another side of what drives this man has been as a dedicated student and instructor in the world of mixed martial arts. As he simultaneously pursued both passions, there were times when DK would train during the day and then have to wear sunglasses to the gigs at night to cover black eyes, but both of his worlds managed to coincide with the other. Then in 1985, DK came to a crossroads where one path meant a solid 9 months of touring with his band, while the other was a tough decision to step down from the stage in order to be there for his children... He chose family and put his music career on hold.
Flash forward to 2008 when DK’s grown children approached their father and asked him why he isn’t doing music anymore. This reignited a spark that had not burned as bright as it should have for a long time. DK reached out to his old friend from the Orange County days, Tom Saviano, now a seasoned veteran songwriter, producer, & session cat in the L.A. music scene. As these two reconnected, it became clear that Saviano would be the right person to guide DK towards his musical redemption. That redemption is the album titled DK TONIGHT.
The result is a sophisticated, classic jazz/pop fusion album full of gorgeous arrangements and outstanding performances from everyone involved. This incredible debut emotes an air that’s reminiscent of the early Al Jarreau/Jay Graydon projects. The opening track, “A New World” flies out of the gate with it’s pulsating groove and sharp horn arrangement featuring DK’s vocals produced to give the song a futuristic/synthetic vibe. Next is “In My Heart" which opens with beautiful fluttering strings, horn accents and acoustic guitar as it leads into the flowing, melodic lead vocal. On “Don’t You Walk Away” you can hear elements of a vocalist who was influenced by the era of classic singers such as Lou Rawls, Nate King Cole, Frank Sinatra and others, but brings it together in his own distinct style. Other outstanding songs that will bring you back to this disc again and again include “One More Dance”, “Whatever Happened To Our Love” and the fantastic “Soul Purpose”. You’ll find that every track on this album is a jewel to rediscover and admire.
And what a supporting cast!!! Guitars: Michael O’Neill, Charles Ferring, Thom Rotella & Bill Champlin. Bass: Eddie Watkins Jr., Neil Stubenhaus & Tom Saviano. Drums: James Gadson, Ricky Lawson, Ed Greene, Tony Moore, Stephen Saviano & Tom Saviano. Piano/Keyboards: Christopher Nelson, David Foster & Tom Saviano. Trumpet/Flugelhorn: Steve Madiao. Trombone: Nick Lane. Saxes: Tom Saviano. Background vocals: Bill Champlin, Jean Marie Arnold, Joe Pizzulo, Bobby Cruz, Denice DeCaro & Ed Whiting.
DK TONIGHT was produced by Tom Saviano and is currently available as an SHM (Super High Material) Japanese Import CD on the Vivid Sounds Label. You can order it through this link: . This album showcases a real fighter who shows you that it’s never too late if you believe in yourself. Regardless of how many units it moves, it’s already an artistic triumphant victory.
