Album Notes
Chopin's Legacy Lives On…

It is my sincere pleasure to share with you some of Chopin’s great works.

Selecting the works of Chopin for my first CD was easy; the irresistible joy and excitement I feel when playing Chopin’s music speaks directly to my heart. It was one of those decisions that I didn’t have to make. But playing his music while enjoyable can also be risky at the same time due to the popularity of his music and that every attempt to play such familiar works comes under scrutiny.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) devoted his music and talent solely to the piano, using advanced harmony and rhythm, luminous textures and haunting melodies to express his thoughts. He excelled brilliantly at writing for the sound of the piano per se. And even in the most technically demanding works his exceptional knowledge of instrument’s capabilities led to beautifully crafted presentation of composer’s ideas in a pianistic way. It is worth noting that Chopin’s writing was in the service of authentic musical expression rather than just for virtuosity’s sake, setting him apart from even the great Franz Liszt.

Many persons over the years have touched my life and encouraged me to continue my musical development, most of all my beloved mother Lyudmila to whom I dedicate this recording. She introduced me to the world of music at age 6 back in St. Petersburg, Russia.
