Album Notes
Who IS The Real Doc Powell?

Having played on over 125 of the most popular songs in R&B, Gospel and Jazz, most people are still not sure who is Doc Powell.

Some may recognize the name from many recordings of the late great Luther Vandross, including the unforgettable guitar solo on one of Vandross biggest hits "Stop to Love." Having recorded and toured the world with Vandross for over thirteen years, no doubt you heard Vandross sing on his hit song (She Loves Me Back)..."This man is the Doctor"...a name that has stuck with Powell for his entire 30 year musical career."

Others may recognize him from any one of his 10 critically acclaimed contemporary projects that are still in rotation today on smooth jazz radio across the country. His Grammy nominated version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (with background vocals supplied by Luther Vandross) has become a classic.

Still not sure you know who is the real Doc Powell? Maybe you saw him on the groundbreaking BET show "The Mo'Nique Show", followed by a barrage of other shows such as Celebration of Gospel, Comic View, the New Apollo Live, BET Awards, Trumpet Awards & Sunday Best. And there is no doubt you have seen him as the lead guitarist with the biggest gospel artist of our time - Kirk Franklin.

On Doc Powell's 11th solo project titled "This Is Soul". each song draws you in to the heart & soul of a man who draws from his numerous musical experiences and seals his own signature sound to each song. Beginning with his instrumental spin on Beyonce's hit "Love on Top" which radio quickly made it hit a second time around. His hauntingly, beautiful rendition of the Take 6 classic "He Never Sleeps" will soothe any restless soul. "The Vibe" (an original song), gives listeners a taste of the past blended perfectly with the present & features the dynamic keyboard riffs of Myron McKinley (EW&F musical director). "Exhale (Shoop, Shoop)" showcases stand out adlibs from the original dream girl, Jennifer Holliday. The new single, "So Cool" is a playful funky urban-jazz exchange between the trumpet and upright bass. Lastly, there is "A Song For Our Prince", a royal tribute to the revered Prince Nelson Rogers which was recorded on the actual day of his death.

Who is the real Doc Powell? One listen to "This IS Soul" answers that question in eleven unforgettable musical expressions that will remind you just who is the real Doc Powell.
