Album Notes
[NOTE: the first 1000 copies of this CD will be individually numbered and autographed by the artist. You can also buy a non-autographed version of this CD.]

Just when you think the 21st century might finally have caught up with Thomas Dolby, he takes another giant musical and technological leap. The artist who pioneered the marriage of technology and art, who first gave synthesizers soul, puts a camera in his brain and takes us on a visual trip inside his head, his heart, and his music; showing us at one and the same time where it came from and where it's going.

This live concert CD was recorded in May 2006 at the Martyrs in Chicago, IL. The sold out audience that night saw one of the best performances from Dolby's 'Sole Inhabitant' tour, which has thrilled crowds across the USA throughout the year.

The 'Sole Inhabitant' tour dates received high praise from critics. The Chicago Tribune wrote, “The audience seemed mesmerized by Dolby’s compositional and musical dexterity…Far from coming off as strictly a nostalgia act, the evening unfolded as a celebration of his past accomplishments and a harbinger for his future as a revitalized performer.” The Orange County Register added, “Most people’s knowledge of Dolby begins and ends with ‘She Blinded Me With Science,’ a sly slice of synth-funk from a superior album (The Golden Age of Wireless) whose variety and depth went far beyond its artificial surface. Indeed, for those who sought him out — certainly for scores of electronica acts who routinely cite him as an influence — Dolby was one-of-a-kind, a do-it-yourself electro wizard whose work conjured warmth and soul from machines whose output in other hands was pure digital chill.” The Washington Post summed it up: “When he whooshed into ‘Europa and the Pirate Twins,’ Dolby sounded startlingly relevant, no easy trick for a talented artist whose entire career is usually unfairly surmised in a single, shouted phrase.”

A logical continuation of Dolby's musical evolution...
TMDR's Sole Inhabitant project is a brilliant reinvention of the never-ending evolution of Dolby's music & influence. Dynamic & powerful performances abound in both the CD & DVD, which closely examines his MO on both composing & performing. An illuminating & (often informally) entertaining offering from a TRUE original! For ALL fans of music, not just TMDR's!

Great set, by a great artist. I had just picked up "Flat Earth" for my girlfriend's son when I stumbled on to this disc. Almost wish that I had waited. Thomas, if you're out there monitoring this feedback, play Albany, NY on your next tour of the northeast.

Fantastic album
Art and technology combine to become more than the sum of their parts on this album, and in the live show it represents. Dolby's music is fantastic, and does not strike the listener as 'dated' in ths slightest. It is his ability, however, with the help of modern sequencing techniques, to present such fantastic music alone on a stage in a compelling and organic way that makes this album a harbinger of what is to come from the technology-savvy artists of the future.

A lot of artists' live shows go exactly like the CD, with perfect reproduction note for note. This is not the case. You can literally rediscover these songs, and Dolby's voice is still great over the years. If you are a fan of his work, this is a must have!

An awesome live album.
I didn't really feel my last review was very good so I think I will give it another try. I think it's pretty cool to hear a modern version of music which has been a favorite of mine all my life. I have to say that the Sole Inhabitant is another one of my favorites to add to the list.

All-around good time!
We saw TD in Milwaukee in a small bar (we were maybe 8' away) and loved every minute of it. This recording is so fantastic to listen to over and over, and it's nice not to hear any background, but only Dolby during the music. We bought it for a friend and also bought the DVD as well! We will enjoy it time and again. As an additive, I would have liked to have heard some commentary on how he builds his songs like he did in Milwaukee, but that's ok. Thanks for offering this.

A Musician's Musician and More...
Of course this CD stands on its own as enjoyable listening, and as others have said, a treat to hear old songs reworked. But I also put this little collection in the same company as the Beatles' Anthologies from a few years back... hearing arrangements modified to bring out certain parts that were previously deeper and less perceptible in the mix... a musician's mix as it were. What a joy!

An excellent concert cd........my only regret is that he didn't perform my fav song of his, "Airwaves". A "MUST BUY"!

Electronics from the Heart
Thomas Dolby clearly demonstrates that he is still a master of production who can also move you to tears. This is an excellent show, which prompted me to run out and get tickets to see Mr. Dolby on his current tour. Highly recommended!

Totally brilliant :-)
He has still got it!!

I missed TMDR playing live when i was in the US - Bad move on my part :-(

BUT this CD makes up for it - I bought one for me and one for a friend! The look on her face when she saw it was AWSOME !!

10 out of 10 for a perfect mix of old material and new material, and a perfect technical "lift and mix" from the desk!

I love it!!

PS: The service from CD baby makes it an even more enjoyable experience buying from this side of the pond.
