ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Don't Cry Paula is a group comprised of Little Rock experimental battle rapper Jason "Mad Trucker" Harrington, and Chris "FACTS the Fancy Animal" Hairston, who is the frontman for sicko Conway synth-core band Ginsu Wives. They share the Arkansas airwaves as part of a larger rap collective called The 4817 Crew, which also consists of Counteract, Thanos, Debby Deb, ill_chemist, Jampire, & Mr. Ordinary. Often members of this crew will accompany them on stage, namely Chemist being their hype man, and Mr Ordinary being their backing singer. However, their songs are written and recorded by the duo between their two home studios.

On their debut they opted for the unusual route of releasing a CD trilogy in a DVD box. However, they are quick to reassure us that by no means did they give us every possible song, but rather an hour a piece of them solo, and one of them combined, which is a more terse collection. 2/3 of the vocals are Trucker, and 2/3 of the production is from FACTS. It is a tapestry of cross-theme reinforcement, but for these guys, and their already quite prolific output, it's just another day at the office. A quick look under the hood, however, shows each disc demarcated to different moods as well, with the Paula disc focusing on humor, the FACTS disc on sentiment, and the Truckzilla disc (one of Mad Trucker's many alter egos) focused on anger. Of course they deviate heavily, but each disc is in it's own lane and in no way any direct extension of the others. It is truly three independent albums, created separately, each with their own cache of songs that didn't make the cut.

It is difficult to compare Don't Cry Paula to any other group, because these guys are collagists, never dropping into a standard sound of any one rap sub-genre, but always trying new ways to surprise and tickle the listener. Trucker, stitches together a wild array of funny 80's and 90's pop culture metaphors wrapped in a grim poetry, while FACTS switches instruments, genres, and moods, like speeding through lanes of traffic while changing clothes on a paper doll. This makes sense, as Jason (Trucker) has an extensive background in technical and creative writing, and Chris (FACTS) is a longtime band geek, turned English teacher. Their mutual love of film collides in the absurd Lynchian world they paint together. On stage they pull freely from the three discs, often even giving their hype man ill_chemist the spotlight to show one of his unreleased gems or reworked Paula versions.
