Album Notes
“A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” is the story of an American music producer from Chicago who comes in search of the “Ritmos” or “Rhythms” of Brazil and then discovers much more than he ever imagined—about Brazil and himself. In many ways, it's a classic tale about love, loss, self discovery and reconnection blended together with a "fish -out-of-water" storyline because the main character visits wonderfully different and exotic Brazil with very little advance preparation.

The concepts behind “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” allow for flexibility in the production’s format as:

1) a live concert performance with multimedia / video mapping and story-telling (narration);
3) an eight- to ten-hour television series with a deep exploration of regional Brazilian musical styles and culture;
2) a full-length feature film; or
4) a musical theatre production.

All of these formats have potential for realization in the future. At present, the producers are working to present live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese”. Designed to be very entertaining but also function somewhat like a travelogue by providing humorous and informative storytelling combined with multimedia (photos and videos), live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” feature a full band with Brazilian percussion, keyboards, guitar, acoustic stringed instruments and a horn section along with high energy singers and dancers.

The producers have created thousands of multimedia images (photos and video) of people and places across Brazil (and in Chicago where the story begins) and have acquired additional content (from professional photographers / videographers and tourism bureaus). These images are all part of an elaborate multimedia and video mapping show projected on a variety of surfaces during live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese”.

Extensive interaction between the performers and the audience during the show serve to educate people about Brazil’s culture, music, diverse population, social issues, geography / destinations, climate, and more. The musical styles of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” begin with jazz, blues, country and American beats and then transition to samba, bossa nova, latin, agogô, forro, reggae and other Brazilian beats as the story progresses.

The idea is to include exceptionally talented (but not yet internationally-known) performers from Brazil, and especially Bahia, who stand to benefit from the international exposure provided by live concert performances of the show on the campuses of major universities in the US and other countries. The format of the show allows for special guest performers (or “convidados” in Portuguese) during any given performance—making it relatively easy to have new performers from Brazil join a tour of the show in progress while others exit the tour as needed to perform at their own engagements in Brazil or elsewhere.

The extensive range of talents and styles represented by the show’s performers also creates an opportunity for the producers to present an additional show on the following day which features “up and coming musicians” from Brazil performing their own music. Due to the economies of scale afforded by “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese”, this approach provides a strong introduction / entre for “up and coming musicians” from Brazil who would not otherwise be invited to perform their own music on university campuses in the US.

According to Doug Adair, one of the show’s creators who has lived in Salvador, Bahia, since 2004 and has worked in Brazil since 1997, “the overarching purpose of the show is to call attention to the many “Ritmos” or “Rhythms” of Brazil by providing an introduction and stimulating thinking and actions related to cultural and educational exchanges, tourism and trade development between the US and other English-speaking countries and Brazil, especially the State of Bahia, Brazil.” Adair says, “the general population of the US has very little knowledge about Brazil. In fact, there are still many people who don’t realize that Portuguese, not Spanish, is the national language of Brazil. That’s one of the reasons for the name of our show.”

Adair says there’s a lot to learn about Brazil and points out, “studies and surveys have shown that university students, in particular, have very limited knowledge of geography and a lack of awareness about cultures and lifestyles of other countries. There’s both a huge need and an opportunity to put together programs that inform and educate university student populations about Brazilian music, dance, cultural celebrations such as Carnaval, cinema, cuisine, nutrition, lifestyle, health, social responsibility, sustainability, etc.” Adair says these types of programs represent an opportunity to increase knowledge of Brazil among an important target population. Colleges and universities provide an ideal forum for exposing Brazil to populations of future business and social leaders who will interact with Brazil in the years ahead as Brazil’s economy continues to grow.

According to Micheal Driscoll, the show’s other creator, “current plans calls for presentation of live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” on university campuses and in other venues during 2013, 2014 and beyond.” Driscoll says the eyes of the world are on Brazil due to the upcoming World Cup in 2014, the Olympics in 2016, the overall upward growth trend in Brazil’s social and economic development, and especially the opportunities presented by the rapidly rising middle class in Brazil.

The special touring band that appears in “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” is Doug Adair & Os Estrangeiros (or “Strangers” in Brazilian Portuguese). The current lineup of the band includes: Fred Barreto, guitar; Isaias Rabelo Miranda, piano / keyboards; Ricardo Sibalde, saxophone and flute; Jurandir Santana, guitar and other fretted instruments; Giba Conceição, percussion; Tadeu Mascarenhas, piano / keyboards and fretted instruments; Nancy Viégas, vocals; Breno Pádua, harmonica; Brian Knave, drums; Tommy Stone, percussion; VJ Gabiru / Davi Cavalcanti, multimedia and video mapping; Micheal Driscoll, production and multimedia; and Doug Adair, vocals and narration.

Adair says, “We have a terrific band. For example, Fred Barreto, one of our two lead guitar players and co-composer of many of the songs in the show, often tours in Europe and Brazil with Slash of Guns n’ Roses fame. Giba Conceição is one of the top percussionists in Bahia (considered as a “world capital” of percussion) and has performed in countries around the world with top entertainers from Brazil. Giba and Fred Barreto deliver Master Classes and Workshops and Giba leads Drumming Circles during the show’s visit to university campuses and other locations. Tadeu Mascarenhas and Nancy Viégas are leaders of Radiola, one of Bahia’s top alternative bands, which fuses Brazilian “roots” music with contemporary sounds.”

In tandem with live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” on university campuses, plans are underway for tours of the show to include a “Hot…and Cool Festival—Celebrating Brazilian Culture, Lifestyle, Innovation & Cuisine”. This “Road Show” type of event, staged prior to live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese”, features a trade fair with interactive exhibits and workshops and master classes with Brazilian musicians, singers, drummers, percussionists, dancers, artists, lifestyle experts and culinary professionals along with other innovators and experts.

These programs present an opportunity to increase knowledge of Brazil among an important target market. Colleges and universities in the US and other countries provide an ideal forum for marketing Brazil (tourism, lifestyle, culture and innovation) to populations of future business and social leaders who will interact with Brazil and establish business and personal relationships that last for many years to come.

For example, universities in the US typically provide breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for thousands upon thousands of students, professors and staff when school is in session. The producers collaborate with Directors of University Foodservice and Hospitality Management & Culinary Programs on campuses to introduce a variety of Brazilian fruits, “superfruits” and “superfoods” such as guarana and açai which are important natural ingredient in energy drinks / smoothies; specialty foods such as queijo coalho (cheese which is grilled like a steak); sun-cured beef and beef jerky; feijoada which is made from slow cooked beans and assorted cuts of dried and smoked meats; African-inspired seafood dishes / stews; and Pão de Queijo, a gluten-free cheese bread which is the national snack of Brazil and well-received by people from the US because of increasing demand and legal responsibility for providing gluten-free products. The same populations targeted for this type of program are also strong targets for other focus areas such as music, music education, musical instruments, and entertainment. Beyond this, most universities have large bookstores on their campuses which also feature the sale of merchandise including t-shirts, sandals / sandalias (there are some well-know Brazilian brands which can benefit greatly from this type of exposure), musical equipment, food products, vitamins, nutritional supplements, healthy snacks, etc.

The producers are currently receiving strong expressions of interest in bringing “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” and the “Hot…and Cool Festival—Celebrating Brazilian Culture, Lifestyle, Innovation & Cuisine” to colleges and universities in the years ahead. Many colleges and universities in the US are facing declining enrollments during the next 10 years and, given the explosive growth rates in Brazil’s economy, the number of people in Brazil who are studying English, and the lack of places for students in high quality, higher education institutions in Brazil, there is also strong interest on the part of US colleges and universities in developing strong relationships with Brazil for the purpose of recruiting more students from Brazil to study in the US.

Beyond this, the producers are interested in working with Brazilian and US entities to organize select trade missions / study tours which bring business executives, third sector / non-profit leaders, educators and government officials from Brazil to learn from and share experiences with their counterparts in areas including as agri-business, bio-fuels, information technology, bio-technology, law enforcement, community colleges, workforce development, management of third sector / non-profit organizations, teacher education, music education and other potential areas of interest.

The producers are working to secure support from a variety of funding and sponsorship sources to bring musicians, drummers, percussionists, singers, dancers, artists and other experts for live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” and produce the “Hot…and Cool Festival—Celebrating Brazilian Culture, Lifestyle, Innovation & Cuisine” along with trade missions / study tours comprised of select business executives, third sector leaders, educators and government officials.

One important funding option is to utilize Brazil’s Cultural Law (Lei Rouanet) which allows Brazilian, US and international corporations which have operations in Brazil, to receive significant reductions in their corporate tax rates as a result of investments they make in cultural programs such as live concert performances of “A Little Lesson…in Brazilian Portuguese” and the “Hot…and Cool Festival—Celebrating Brazilian Culture, Lifestyle, Innovation & Cuisine”. The producers and their counterparts in the US and Brazil are in the process of identifying and contacting key people at corporate headquarters of Brazilian, US and international corporations to enlist the participations and support of their business units in Brazil.
