ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Saxophonist and composer, Doug Martin, is a storyteller. But unlike most storytellers, he doesn't use words to weave his tale. His language of choice is much more primal and compelling: the language of music. Jazz music. But telling a story is only part of the picture. It must pack an emotional punch. It must move the listener. Music, perhaps more so than any other medium, has this power.
Martin has no interest in music whose primary function is to dazzle the audience with displays of technical skill. In his world, the melody, the harmony, the rhythm must serve the story and every note of every solo must enhance its mood. To do this, you have to, as a player, be totally involved in the story. As Martin himself puts it, "...I find that the best way to move the listener is to write [and perform] music that moves me". And audiences do get involved in the music. As Alayne McGregor of the OttawaJazzScene has remarked, "Doug Martin attract[s] careful listeners".
In 2011, Doug Martin released a quartet album entitled Odyssey which told 12 stories, each inspired by one of his experiences travelling in Europe. But were they moving? This is what Erik McCall of EDA Music Radio (Scotland) had to say about this CD: "So emotional, this music. Great work. Love it". The album went on to garner airplay in Canada, the US, Great Britain and Ireland, France, Switzerland and Cuba. Two of the tracks achieved critical acclaim. "Amsterdam" got Honourable Mention in San Francisco's West Coast International Songwriting Contest. Alex Johnston of the CMI Music Group said of this tune, "Great sound, great playing, great arrangement ". Then "Kafka Was Here" made the semi-final round in the prestigious UK Songwriting Competition. Stuart Cheese of One Night Stand Music commented: "This is a very nice track indeed. It is so well-written and performed. Great sax work." This same track made it to number 6 on the Broadjam (UK) Jazz-Swing Top 10 in 2013.
To add to Martin's list of accomplishments, in 2013 he was named Artist of the Week on Skyjazz Radio in Oshawa, Ontario and then Artist of the Month on Yourhometownradio in Massachusetts, USA.
And finally in 2014, he received an invitation to perform at the Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza in Havana, Cuba. So in December of that year he boarded a plane for Havana where he found three Cuban musicians to accompany him in three successful performances of his own music. Cuban musicians are among the best in the world and Martin says he was honoured to share the stage with them and thrilled to be invited to participate in an event in which he could represent his country. His experiences travelling and performing in this country have been transformative and were the inspiration for this latest release, Spirit of Survival.
