Album Notes
Doug has been playing slack key guitar since he was six years old when he mail ordered his first guitar... a small Roy Rogers and Trigger guitar. A family friend tuned the guitar to a slack key tuning and handed it to Doug and said, "See what you can do with this." and Doug's never looked back. Sandy accompanies Doug on slack key guitar and slack key ukulele.

At their concerts, Doug often demonstrates how you can play fingerstyle slack key on an ukulele. He always told Sandy he wished he could have two more strings to more effectively play slack key fingerstyle on the ukulele. In 2015, Sandy bought Doug a specialized ukulele called a 'kiku' - it has a tenor sized body, a wider neck, and six strings, the regular 4 ukulele and two additional bass strings for playing the bass of the fingerstyle. The kiku arrived and had such a sweet, beautiful voice, Doug and Sandy began experimenting with accompaniment with Sandy's tenor ukulele.

They were having such fun sitting on their lanai and playing together Sandy suggested they could make a Slack Key ukulele CD. After an experimental set of recordings, they decided to share the fun and joy of their instruments and the local environment with their fans. Recorded live on their lanai, the ukulele entrances the listener with tradewinds, shama thrush songs, cooing of mourning doves, a passing shower, Kauai's inimitable roosters, and even a few bleats from a neighbor's goats.

Sandy' is arranging slack key ukulele classes/kanikapila ('play the strings'), teleclasses, and tuning/chord charts to help people learn and play along with Doug, experiencing the joy she has playing with him.

Here are a couple of early reactions from our initial sales:
"'Live on the Lanai' arrived yesterday and we are loving it !  Every track is truly delightful.  We've played it so much over these two days, we'll have the poor CD worn out in no time. " -Dale & Marian, Virginia

"Sandy and Doug, just wanted to tell you I got my copy of your new CD and love the sound of the birds, water, and chickens in the background. Yes, I know chickens are birds too, but they deserve their own category! I have the CD playing in the background and I keep catching myself thinking the windows are open - although we have no chickens around here! The music is lovely and calming, too - as is all your music, but the sounds from the lanai just set this apart. Mahalo for making this wonderful recording and making my evening more relaxed and enjoyable." -Ben Davis
