Album Notes
Doug Young's debut CD, Laurel Mill, features original tunes and arrangements for solo acoustic instrumental guitar. Originally an electric guitarist from Ohio, Doug now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and focuses on acoustic fingerstyle guitar. Doug's musical influences range from the Beatles to Martin Simpson, Laurence Juber and John Renbourn. Doug's acoustic guitar style uses a range of both standard and alternate tunings.

Laurel Mill was nominated for the 2004 Just Plain Folks Music Award in the Solo Guitar category and placed second. See http://www.jpfolks.com/MusicAwards/2004/AlbumWinners.htm

Bill Wright at "Gods of Music" (http://www.godsofmusic.com) says: "The guitar work is superb... The composition is slick, and the music is just good fun. Doug seems to be having a lot of fun when he plays, and the effect is infectious.

Kirk Albrecht at minor7th (http://www.minor7th.com) says: "This is one of the best self-produced initial efforts I have come across, and if proof is in the playing, well, this one's seen a lot of time in my CD player lately."

Guitar Nine records says: "This is an enjoyable CD... The recording is intimate - you'll feel as if you're enjoying a private performance with just you, Young, and his Wingert and Ryan guitars. The opening track "No Two Ways About It" is a nice introduction to Young's compositional and playing style, and if that hooks ya, stick around, kick back, and enjoy the remaining fifteen instrumentals."

Rambles says "Laurel Mill ... is one of the better acoustic fingerstyle guitar CDs I've run across in a long while. How can you not just slow down and take a time out when you listen to music like this? ... Doug's version of the traditional tune Shenandoah is another example of his expertise on acoustic guitar. This timeless piece is presented in all its majesty and then some. Doug's arrangement is the most touching I've heard."

Bridge Guitar Reviews says "Doug Young excels in playing guitar music with intimacy and tenderness."

Wind and Wire says "guitar aficionados should enjoy this as much as the more casual fan of the instrument. ... There are uptempo numbers, like the opening No Two Ways About It, which is spirited but with a slight edge to it (and featuring adroit work by Young as his fingers seem to be everywhere at once) ... There are also pensive quiet songs here as well, such as the aptly titled and softly romantic Missing You"

Wonderful acoustic guitar work!
Doug Young is a wonderful player. Upbeat music and great fingerpicking work. Wonderful music for working, driving, relaxing, or whatever. This is an excellent CD- check it out.

I enjoy acoustic guitar, and when my friend recommended her brother's self-produced cd, I took a listen and knew immediately it would become a favorite. Doug's playing is natural and seems to flow effortlessly. I like listening very much!

K. Anderson

Wonderful acoustic guitar.
There's nothing like some nice acoustic guitar to help unwind from a hard day's work, and this one hits the spot.

Strong Debut Album
Doug has some great chops on this CD. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the fingerstyle arena. Some tunes are Kottke inspired, while others give a sense of early de Grassi. A real piece of ear candy.

Jim Smith

One smooth CD. I've listened to it over and over since I got it.

Two Thumbs up -- and I wish I had more Thumbs
"Laurel Mill" is, in a few words, an outstanding, professional quality solo fingerstyle guitar album. It is a mixture of orginals ("Missing You" - my personal favorite) and covers ("I Will" - Beatles tune). Young blends the styles of many players who have influenced his development as a fingerstyle guitar player and yet he has made these tunes his own. Amazingly this CD was recorded by Young, alone in his garage and yet the recording quality is far better than that of the many "established" recording labels. The touching quality of Doug's arrangements and playing defies the idea that this is his first CD and I hope it is not his last. I give this CD a rating of two thumbs up with the caveat that I would have ranked it higher if I had more than two thumbs. This CD gets steady play on my stereo and it never fails to attract the attention of casual, passing listeners -- In my opinion it simply represents Acoustic Steel String FInergstyle music at its very best. Nice job Doug.

This CD is made up of some beautiful compositions in various tunings and is simply sublime. The guitar playing is very spirited and colourful, and Doug's love of playing good acoustic guitars transmits itself wondefully. The quality of the production is really high, as is the artwork. This was obviously a labour of love! It has inspired me to tune my guitar to DADGAD for the first time! This is a great CD to have playing in the background, but really warrants close listening on a good Hi-Fi in order to pick up the quality of the playing and production. I'm a sure customer for the next one Doug - keep 'em coming!

Versital fingerstyle guitarist
This CD gets a lot of play time in our house, Doug's work is very well executed and versital. It is one of the top 4 CDs out of over 100+ instrumental acoustic fingerstyle guitar CD's. 2 thumbs up Doug, Can't wait till the next release. You can not go wrong with this CD! Thanks Doug, Brian Horton

Beautifully done.
The sound quality of this CD is really amazing. As good or better than anything I've heard. This is as it should be because of the clarity of Doug's finger picking. The highest praise I can give it is that it is on my shelf right next to Tommy Emmanuel and Laurence Juber.
