Album Notes
The DPSW Quartet was formed in 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee and features pianist Bruce Dudley, drummer Derrek Phillips, saxophonist Jesús Santandreu, and bassist Jonathan Wires. The four musicians joined forces to present honest, heartfelt, sophisticated music that takes the listener on joyful rides through exciting and sometimes unfamiliar terrain. Focusing on music composed by members of the group, DPSW Quartet stays on the leading edge of contemporary improvised music. The group was captured live in The Cave, at the Nashville Jazz Workshop in March of 2014, which resulted in the album, DPSW Quartet Live.

Since the release of Bruce Dudley’s 2012 CD, The Solo Sessions, on Jazz Music City records, he formed a quartet that features the writing and bass playing of Jonathan Wires, Spanish saxophonist Jesús Santandreu, and drummer Derrek Phillips. His 2010 recording, Mostly Monk, featured a double quartet (string quartet and jazz quartet, featuring saxophonist Don Aliquo). Dudley has appeared on numerous recordings, including those of JazzFX, Sandra Dudley (Close To You), Evan Cobb (Falling Up), and Imer Santiago (Hidden Journey). He is Associate Professor of Commercial Music at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and adjunct professor of jazz piano at Vanderbilt University.

Drummer Derrek Phillips has toured the world and recorded with Kurt Elling, Charlie Hunter, Vijay Iyer, Greg Osby, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, and Christian McBride, among others. His solo projects include the Derrek Phillip Manufactory, which blends hip-hop, rock, electronica, drum-n-bass, jazz, and spoken word. Phillips teaches drum set at Vanderbilt University and Middle Tennessee State University.

A native of Valencia, Spain, saxophonist Jesús Santandreu graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Berklee College of Music and studied composition at music Conservatories in Madrid. He is a sought after composer having completed commissions for the Adolphe Sax Saxophone Quartet, Spanish Brass Luur Metalls, Sedajazz Collective, Orquestra Azahar de Castellón, and for wind band competitions in Spain. Jesus served as composer-in-residence for Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Beijing, China. His works have also been premiered in Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, and the United States. As a jazz saxophonist, Santandreu has recorded more than a dozen albums. He currently lives in Valencia, Spain.

Jonathan Wires has recorded more than 30 albums and has performed with, among others, Frank Lowe, Billy Bang, Michael Jeffrey Stevens, Jeff Coffin, Cassandra Wilson, Rod McGaha, Alvin Fielder, Calvin Newborn, Don Aliquo, and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. He is a prolific composer who writes inspiring and imaginative music that always contains organic ideas and development. He currently teaches at Middle Tennessee State University.
