Album Notes
Boston-based Dragonfly is a 5-piece band that is also a musical expedition. From Amsterdam to Morocco, and Bombay to Paris, the band concocts a heady mix of exoticism, funk, rock, and pop in what has been described as "intelligent and emotional songs, fronted by Singh's distinctive and intimate vocals, and backed by a hugely capable and versatile band that can effortlessly move from quiet and moody ballads to anthemic rockers, from engagingly mysterious grooves to dance/funk numbers". Dragonfly released its first album "The Edge of the World" in 2003 on Sony Music in India. Dragonfly is one of the few rock bands to be featured on Channel V, MTV India and MTV Desi. "Edge" was also released in the UK (via UMG) and the US to excellent reviews and strong airplay in the US college radio market. 2005 saw the release in India of the band's second album, "Blind" which blends traditional indian instruments with the band's high-energy rock and funk sound. In addition, the band worked with a number of top asian remix artists to create a bonus CD of indo-influenced lounge and dance remixes that was released with "Blind". The band is currently releasing the album in Europe and the US in 2006. Originally assembled in 2001 by lead singer/songwriter Miki Singh and reknowned Boston blues guitarist Peter Parcek,. the band is rounded out by the veteran keyboardist and DJ Brother Cleve (The Del Fuegos, Combustible Edison), drummer Steve Scully (James Taylor, Juliana Hatfield, Letters to Cleo), and bassist Marc Hickox (Peter Parcek Trio, Lucky Stereo).

This album impressed me before I even opened its book-like case.
This album impressed me before I even opened its book-like case. The hardbound CD sleeve opens to reveal a quarter-inch thick series of band photos and tastefully laid out lyrics. I spend several minutes perusing
the photos before I even put the CDs into my stereo. Once I began the audio journey that is "The Edge of the World",
however, I stopped paying attention to the cover art. The first CD of this set is full of moody, stare-at-the-ceiling grooves. Even the uptempo songs on these disks possess an intricate, enticing quality that pulls the listener into the sound. Parcek's guitar is never too flashy
– it doesn't need to be, considering its rich tone and tastefully thought out licks. Scully, Hickox, and Cleve keep the grooves steady and full; although some of the songs felt a little dated, nothing on either CD sticks out as poorly arranged fluff. Every part has its purpose, and Dragonfly is obviously a band that plays to its strengths.

I would highly recommend checking out "The Edge of the World". To go a step further, you need to get the album complete (book, photos, and disks) to fully appreciate its high quality. I wish more artists thought in the big picture, like Dragonfly obviously does.

Moody & atmospheric pop with roots in the Eighties
Miki's voice sounds a little like Steve Forbert. I like the way that Miki has developed as a vocalist and songwriter since Jetset--I was very pleasantly surprised that this release is so much better than their first. The guitar work is really, really good. Parcek plays like an updated Knopfler sometimes and he always serves the song. The music is more about mood than hooks--I didn't find myself singing the songs after the cd stops, but I really enjoy listening to this with headphones. It makes pictures in my head.

They must have spent a fortune on the packaging this, too. The photography alone is great.
