Album Notes
"Dreamboat Rendezvous" features Drayton & The Dreamboats swinging and singing at their best. While rooted in the small-combo vocal jazz tradition pioneered by groups such as the Nat King Cole Trio, The Dreamboats' sound incorporates several eras of jazz as well as elements from vintage pop and rock & roll. The group's sound eschews the flashier elements that have come to define vocal jazz in favor of a more sincere, relaxed-yet-confident delivery. Recalling the tender and conversational tone of Chet Baker more than extravagant Sinatra-esque crooners, vocalist and violinist Drayton Aldridge leads the way while allowing plenty of space for the band to shine. And shine they do, with the creative, playful, and rock solid playing of guitarist Luke Norton, bassist Craig Sandberg, and drummer Mike Oliver. Drayton's violin features prominently on most tunes, adding a unique and sophisticated color that differentiates the band's sound from the standard jazz combo template. Meanwhile tenor saxophonist Ben Colvin elevates several of the album's tracks by lending his soulful and virtuosic musical voice to the mix. The band invites its listeners to join them through seven thoughtfully selected standards with styles ranging from hot swing to crooner ballads, rock-tinged waltzes, and latin grooves. With "Dreamboat Rendezvous" the Dreamboats have created an album that lovers of jazz as well as rock, pop, and various styles of art music will find plenty about to enjoy.
