Album Notes

Dr Mastermind Before & After NOW available on pressed replicated CD not cdr-pro
This CD chronicles the history of Matt mcCourt;s long running group Dr Mastermind which started out as Evil Genius in 1982 with Kip Doran and Matt on guitar
the first recordings were made with local laegend Chris Newmans' Untouchables rythm section Druumer Chon Carter and Bassist Dave Koenig the first incarnation of what later to be known as Control in 1981 was originally named under the gun and was re recorded in 1984 with the Evil Genius lineup recorded at Ace Tunnel Sound in sw portland with engineer Zack Zacharia( robert cray) the week after the Malice Sessions that Kip and Deen castronovo and i did with Jay Reynolds and singer James Neal
Wild Dogs was still a recording school band at the time with no intention of doing much after Black n Blue ran away to hoillywood taking both drummers Jaime and Pete and Deen the obvious candidate for Malice
( in a few weeks that would change and he joined wild dogs and released 2 lps on shrapnel records
it was ater the 2nd lp that the climate at wild dogs writing sessions was not conducive to productivity so i asked kip to help me write and flesh some tunes out to show the band who were more interested in the groupies they were bringing to the rehearsals than wwriting songs
Haven our good gigging buddiesfoffered me their studio and drummer Rick Baggett who was once a candidate for the dogs chair at a wee 16 years old ! Kip and i worked out some early tunes with him in a northportland building only to discover that behind the scenes the dogs were actively trying out different singers and headed for a glam rock sound after they found a replacement and i was shocked to discover this i deced to go ful steam ahead with the evil genius concept and kip found drummer Ben Linton(later he toured with Testament as drum tech ) and bassist Ken Goldstein whose brother Seth was the MC at the first gig i ever perfromed the " spaghetti dinner talent show at a jewish community center) so we decided to pu tken in the band put me up front as i was on bass and Photographer Paul Kearney suggested we get a 2nd guitarist and head for a scorpions dual lead sound and Chris jacobsen joined the fold( Chris aka Jake Shit was a roomate with El Duce and the Mentors in Hollywood and enetertained us with great stories of Eldon's escapades. After we were weell oiled and had fleshed out the 9 songs i had written we enetered Recording Associates the same facility where Wild Dogs Mayhem recorded. the group played a series of live dates in the region and with image being the ting at time i decided to poke fun at the hairbands and we all wore the same elvira wigs and had semi matching attire ( the wigs proved to blind us from driving so a friend who owned a limo company would drive us to the front door! ) i tried to get labels interested but no takers eventually the reviews of the tape led to the breakup of the band with some bad feelings meanwhile the new singer for the wild dogs john tejeda 'failed to show up for a gig" one morning so they called me to see if id drive to califronia for a show i did and woff we went to humboldt county and it seemed i was back inte band and they were even doing some of my evil geius tunes we giggedwith yngwiue talas culprit and a bunch more before i realized they had other plans and the mayhem guys asked me to join and we recorded fuck yuo and domination for the upcoming burned alive lp so the songs were being used - just not in the way i had planned ! during my time with mayhem Mike Varney had been listening to the evil genius tape and it grew on him and made a proposal what if.... yuo got deen to play on this and we found a super guitarist and well do a record but you have to be the persona and if yu get deen let im kow i can pu thim to work as a session player and paid member of tony macalpine's group BUT we have to change a few lyrics i said ok and did a rewrite and voila producer approved the first payer mike connected me with was Paul Gilbert who was stil in PA none of the local cats were good enough paul was amazing he inspired me to no end but i think he had other ideas and as it turns out he is not a sideman he is "the guy" so my love for jmii anmd yngwie came up and next thing i know im hooked upwith Kurt James who had been the original guitarist with tommy aldridge and rudy sarzo in "project driver" i went from zero to hero in a flash! meanwhile the local hotshot i recruited for guitar Ron Chick was not happy when i informed him that he could play rythm on the basic tracks we recorded in portland but kurt james was going to be the main man on the album( consequently Ron much to my chagrin did not recieve any credit on the record ) during the finishing stages of the dr mastermidn lp at Prairie sun studio in cotatit calif the home of all the legendary shrapnel records including Steeler Deen moved to the area with my friends helping him and another guy i know whose truck was used to haul the gear ( Deen's drums were filled with boxes of cereal and kraft mac and cheese boxes! care packages from home to get em goin while kurt and i finished the tracks lead gtr vocal and then Mike Varney said im not conviced it was you on bass so id like you to re record it here on a custom bass with a huge precision neck and an EMG active pickup somethign that was unheard of in 1986 i nailed them all in a take or two and won the confidence of the guitar guru and i never forgot how much i loved that pickup for bass .
the photo session for the cover was a great experience once again i was art director as i was on the Wild Dogs man;s best friend lp ( that was also my dong and design and blood on the backdrop ) we set up the collection of ventriloquist dolls ( mike owned a whole bunch more but these were his picks ) some were old and life size and kind of creepy and in those days many lp covers were not photos and i love photo- art so this was a real fun thing for me we got Clyde Randall and Jerry Cottrell into masks and they appear in the shot and as i say im the "dummy" in the middle of it all the worst part of it all was knowing it was a studio gig it was a damn good band and would have been amazing if we had actually rehearsed the music! but this was all off the cuff ok the song goes like this ( Deen had a copy of evil genius but these wereother arrangements! hes amazing like that kurt got the tape of the basics he was a little more prepared but hes a jazz improv master
after the record came out and i was back in Portland i recruited Michael Brown who recently passed away after a fast and fierce battle with cancer Michael was one of the sweetest guys ive ever known and an extremely talented shredder we played a few gigs as dr mastermind and did some photos but it wasnt until 1999 after a reunion with kurt James on a local tv show that Michael pete laufman and i connected and gave Dr amstermind Mkiii new life calling ourself Evil Genius but promoters insisted on using the wild dogs name on posters our set list was mostly Dr Mastermind tunes as a trio and a hearty work ethic we supported Dokken Dio, Great White, Blue Oyster Cult, Thor Armored Saint ,even played the end of tour party for Bonnie Rait and Jackson Brown's crew that lasted til march of 2000 we recorded 28 songs 5 of them were done at Recording associates with engineer Bob Stoutenberg and finished one lp called king of the world the title track is on this cd a few adventurous guitarists have sent me songs to work on and in the case of Boriz Haranki he redid the entire dr mastermind lp! with midi drums i added vocals and put it out on the history of dr Mastermind cd here we showcase a track of his own
Kurt James played lead on an instrumental track i wrote that is also on here
