As described in OPRAH Magazine (10/02), Dr. Myra Weiss' Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course uses techniques popularized by Jon Kabat-Zinn, UMass Medical School (see www.mbsr-nyc.com) Mindfulness-based stress reduction provides deep and broad impacts on your life. To be mindful is to develop skills in attention and moment-to-moment awareness of internal and external events. A higher level of awareness gives you more choice to respond and influence circumstances, as opposed to being carried away by reacting to currents of stress. Anyone can learn to transform stressful situations by going through them in order to get past them. This is accomplished by using awareness of your breath and body to achieve skills of relaxed observing and clarity.

The Mindfulness Meditation CD includes the following:

Guided Body-Scan / Relaxation:
In the MBSR Course, this 20-minute Body Scan is meant to facilitate your skill in ATTENTIONAL CONTROL. A side effect of this is that it frequently creates a deep state of relaxation, as you learn the art of escorting attention to where you want it to be. After consistent practice with this section of the CD, many people achieve the state of attentional control and relaxation by either listening to the CD for five-plus minutes daily or taking 3-4 seconds, a few times daily, to become mindful of the body.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation:
This 30-minute meditation facilitates moment-to-moment awareness of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, as well as a greater ability to influence life circumstances. Mindfulness Meditation can be done in any posture and at any moment during the day or night. After consistent use, meditation proceeds well with rare, or no, use of the CD.

Introduction to Walking Meditation:
This 8-minute introduction teaches the basics of walking meditation. Walking meditation is simply a meditation practice which uses the feet as the primary object of attention, instead of breath or any other region of the body.

About Dr. Weiss:

Dr. Myra Weiss, a doctoral-level clinical social worker, has practiced psychotherapy and meditation for over 30 years. She has completed the Professional Training for Healthcare Professionals and the Teaching Development Intensive, taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Saki Santorelli & senior faculty from UMass Center for Mindfulness-Stress Reduction.

Dr. Weiss is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD), has reached the highest rank in teaching family therapy (Approved Supervisor, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists - AAMFT) and is a Member of the American Family Therapy Association (AFTA).

At last a new door opened...
On this search for peace, I've tried journal writing, cognitive thought records, doctor visits, evaluations and second opinions. A group to spill my fears, a therapist with Freudian ears, to whom I just talked and talked... At last a new door opened, learning moment to moment, to practice attention to the surround sound, momentary awareness and mindfulness. Thoughts come and go in degrees...and that's ok. That's ok!

This CD provides a relaxed, easy way to fold into meditation while instilling the deepest practice: escorting your awareness where you want it to be. That is, not on all the stuff that is threatening you, destabilizing you, or tickling you. Rather, breathing yourself into the present moment. Simple and amazingly effective.
