Album Notes
Americana and Bluegrass--songs by David Williams, in the literate folk music vein of Gillian Welch, Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, John Prine, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, and others who write about the American landscape. These songs range from bluegrass, to folk, to swing, dealing with everything from icons such as "Annie Oakley" to a man's search for meaning in "Hungry Ghost." Many, like "Floodwater," "Why Do Angels Get Wings," "Ukraine Girl, " and "You're Gonna Lose Her," deal with women who are facing hard times; while others, such as "Paul's Song," "Half Bad," tell stories of men's woes. The title song, "Crazy Kind," is about two musicians who pickup and start playing the joints together, unsure whether this will be their last gig or not. "Going Home" is a declaration of love, as is the swinging tune "Cheyenne," and the bluesy "Redheaded Singer," which is all lust.

The album features the fabulous bluegrass singer, Kristina Murray, whose voice cuts clear and straight into the material, bringing a high and lonesome emotional twang to the tunes, and she and David perform duets on a number. The CD also features Rockygrass mandolin winner, Jordan Ramsey (possibly the best mandolin player in the US), as we as Chris Elliott, another Rockygrass winner, on banjo. National fiddle champion (Weiser, ID) Katie Glassman does some superb fiddling on many of the cuts--reminiscent of Vassar's bluesy voicings and jazzy riffs. Duane Webster, bass player emeritus of Colorado, plays standup with his usual perfection and unsurpassed tone.
