ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Geordie Haley (guitarist/composer/improviser)
www.myspace.com/geordiehaley

Geordie Haley is a guitarist, composer and improviser living and playing music in Toronto. Geordie has established himself in Toronto as a group leader and performer since moving there from Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1997 where his regular bands Sameboat, the Exploding Meet and Ujamma were festival favourites,

Geordie Haley’s Everytime Band with Christine Duncan (vocals), Jean Martin (drums), Evan Shaw (sax), Paul Donat (bass), Eugene Martynec (computers) and Ryan Driver (flute and synth) was a featured act in 2007 at L’Off Festival in Montreal and in 2005 at the Toronto and Halifax jazz festivals. Most recently, the group performed at the Eddie Prevost Interface Series in October 2007, hosted by the Association of Improvising Musicians of Toronto (AIMToronto).

Geordie also leads a trio of trios with recent album releases: his East Delta Trio with Evan Shaw (sax) and Vineet Vyas (tabla); his Sea of Song Trio with Rob Clutton (bass) and Brandon Valdivia (drums) and the Geordie Haley Trio with Nick Fraser (drums) and Scott Thomson (trombone).

Other Toronto based groups Geordie performs with include the Liquidaires, the Bill Grove Quartet and the Eve Brown Quartet.

Geordie is currently a co-curator of the Leftover Daylight Series, a weekly, live music presentation with an emphasis on improvisation, and produced in association with AIMToronto and ArrayMusic. He has had the pleasure of playing with improvisers John Oswald, Rhonda Rindone, Lori Freedman, Marilyn Lerner and Roger Turner, dance artists Susie Burpee and Shannon Cooney and video artist June Pak.

Vineet Vyas is one of Canada\'s young and dynamic musical talents. He is a disciple of the legendary Tabla maestro, Pandit Kishan Maharaj. During his performances, audiences worldwide are enthralled as they witness and feel the depth of his musicality, spontaneity, and creativity.

Raised in Truro, Nova Scotia, but now based in Toronto and New Delhi, Vineet was born into a family of traditional musicians of India: his grandfather, Pandit Brahmanand Vyas, was a renowned vocalist of New Delhi, and initiated Vineet into North Indian (Hindustani) classical music at the tender age of five. In 1987, he began studying with Pandit Kishan Maharaj in Benares, in the traditional style of Guru-shishya parampara. After intense training and sadhana (dedication) to his guru, Vineet has firmly established himself as an accomplished tabla artist. Nowadays he is a much sought after performer in India, Europe and North America.

Vineet has performed with some of India\'s eminent classical artists such as Us. Amjad Ali Khan, Pt Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Us. Shahid Parvez and Us. Aashish Khan just to name a few. He has been awarded scholarships from the Canadian Government in recognition of his musical talent and has been featured on CBC television and radio. His new solo CD, Taalworks, is a breakthrough album, featuring tabla at the forefront, with interesting and new melodic textures, such as Beethoven\'s Moonlight Sonata.

Evan Shaw is a saxophonist/composer who is an active member of the Toronto jazz and creative music scene. After graduating from St. F.X. University, Evan spent two years in Boston were he graduated from New England Conservatory with a Masters in Music. Through these years he studied improvisation and composition with artists such as Jimmy Guiffre, Bevan Manson, Ran Blake, George Garzone, Lee Hyla, Greg Carter, Gene Smith, Bruce Dudley and Andy Wienzler.

Evan can be heard on such diverse recordings as the Maritime Jazz Orchestra\'s \"Now and Now Again\" (with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, John Taylor, and John Hollenbeck), the Saint Dirt Elementary School debut CD \"Hangin\' Out with the Kid Who\'d Eat Anything for a Dollar\", the Ken Aldcroft Trio +1 CD “From Our Time”, and on the soundtrack to the short film \"Echoes in the Rink: The Willie O’Ree Story\", which was featured at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1998.

Evan co-founded the original, composition-based \"new jazz\" sextet Out of Order in 1995. The group has two independently released CDs and has performed throughout Eastern Canada and Toronto; including repeat appearances at the Du Maurier Jazz Festivals in Toronto and Halifax, Fredericton Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, Hear TO Go Festival (Toronto) and most recently at Soundstreams Lecture and Film Series at Ryerson University.

Evan has also performed with artists such as Peggy Lee, Dylan Van der Schyff, Reuben Radding, Justin Haynes, Ron Samworth, Jean Martin, Michael Bates, Mike Murley, David Braid, Myk Freedman\'s St.Dirt Elementary School, Allison Cameron, Brodie West and many others. Evan continues to work with ongoing collaborators Ken Aldcroft, Joe Sorbara, Geordie Haley and visual artist June Pak.

GEORDIE HALEY’S EAST DELTA TRIO ***
Summer Garden Party Verge
Recorded almost a year and a half prior to his recent Sea of Song Trio disc, Geordie Haley’s East Delta Trio’s Summer Garden Party offers insight into the Toronto-based guitarist’s continued development. Along with saxophonist Evan Shaw and renowned tablas player Vineet Vyas, Haley creates a sustained meditation on the intricate rhythms intrinsic to Indian classical music. While the lack of dynamics makes some of the longer pieces arduous to absorb, the interplay between Vyas’s playing and Haley’s percussive picking is hypnotic. Conversely, it’s the spare funkiness of “Minor Figure” and the brooding, bluesy “Ipperwash” where the East Delta Trio transcend the limits of the trio format. Chris B
