ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The tunes in this collection represent the fruits of a long musical partnership of two of Boston’s most respected five string banjo pickers. Ed Britt was for many years the banjo picker for the Boston area old-time band Blunt Instruments, and is the designer of the fancy Grand Artist Renaissance model OME banjo. He is playing in the traditional old-time clawhammer style, picking down on the strings with the index or middle finger, while the thumb follows on the off-beat on the fifth, or drone string, occasionally dropping down for melody or decoration. Ed is a noted banjo scholar, a leading expert on David L. Day, the Victorian Age designer of some of America’s most prized banjos. Don Borchelt plays in the three-finger, up-picking style more often associated with bluegrass music, which employs a myriad of left hand “roll” patterns to provide both melody and a highly syncopated rhythm. Don is a veteran of several Boston area bluegrass bands, including Adam Dewey and Crazy Creek, and Wry Whiskey. He plays mostly old-time music today, generally on a semi-fretless banjo. All of the tunes on this CD are traditional American or French Canadian dance tunes, recorded over ten years in Don’s living room, using a variety of analog and digital recording machines.
