ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Sunny Banks by Edel Fox and Neill Byrne

From counties Clare and Waterford respectively, Edel Fox and Neill Byrne have been playing music together for the past three years. Edel grew up in Miltown Malbay and over the years has become well known as a Clare concertina player, specialising in the music of her native county. Neill was born and raised in Ferrybank, Waterford where he grew up in a very musicial household - both his father and sister are also musicians. He learnt much of his music from the great Wexford-based composer John Dwyer and Limerick fiddle player Noelle O’Connor.

The combination of styles and influences between Edel and Neill has created a new and exciting sound. While their influences range from duos like Noel Hill and Tony Linnane, Caoimhín Ó Raghaillaigh and Mick O'Brien, and James Kelly and Paddy O’Brien, they have a fresh approach. The lively dancing rhythm from Co. Clare is still evident but their repertoire is completely different.

Together, they share a common interest in unusual versions of tunes and uncommon compositions from composers such as John Dwyer, Finbar Dwyer, Tommy Peoples, Charlie Lennon, Joe Liddy, Sean Ryan, Ed Reavy, Lorna Davey, Brendan McGlinchey, Paddy O'Brien (Tipperary) and Paddy O'Brien (Offaly). There repertoire also includes a composition of Edel herself.

There new CD “The Sunny Banks” was launched at the Scoil Samhradh Willie Clancy in July. It also features 2012 TG4 Young Musician of the Year from An Rinn, Co. Waterford Caoimhín Ó Fearghail and Cavan bodhrán player Richie Lyons.

Write-up by well known musician and composer John Dwyer:

A new CD by two young musicians Edel Fox and Neill Byrne has just come on the market. It is one of the best to come on stream for some time.

Edel Fox comes from Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare. Her background in traditional music extends back through some generations. Edel began playing the concertina when she was six and with the interest and encouragement of her parents, Michael and Maria, she progressed rapidly. She has been frequently recorded for radio and television. Edel won the prestigious TG4 Young Musician of the Year Gradam Ceoil Award in 2004. Edel has an innate talent for structuring and arranging tunes and she is proud to acknowledge the Clare influence in her musical style.

Neill Byrne is from Waterford City and he began to learn the craft of traditional fiddle playing at a young age under the tutelage of Noelle O’ Connor, a fiddle player from Limerick who was living in Waterford at the time. Neill got an excellent grounding from Noelle, and with the support and encouragement of his parents, Pat and Paula; he has matured into one of the top exponents of traditional fiddle playing. Niall actively encourages young aspirants to take up the craft and he is continuously involved in organising sessions and events throughout the county.

Caomhín Ó Fearghail, the accompanist on this CD, is a young West Waterford man from An Rinn. His delicate harmonic contribution on guitar and bouzouki greatly enhances this excellent production. He is also one of our greatest flute and uilleann pipe players. Caomhin won the TG4 Young Musician of the Year Award in 2012.

In listening to this CD, one is emotionally carried into a mystical world where nothing else seems to matter except the golden notes of this fine collection of tunes. The overall plaintive, appealing affect runs right through; from track one to the end. There is a nice variety of old tunes and more modern compositions in this collection, which will give much satisfaction to the listener.

John Dwyer, May 2013
