Album Notes
Inspired by two historically famous recording sessions, one by Sidney Bechet and the other by Django Reinhardt, this second CD by Ed Wise features a light, chamber-like quartet consisting of Stan Slotter on cornet, Joe Midiri on clarinet and soprano sax, Pat Mercuri on guitar and Ed on string bass. It was recorded in early 2010 before a live audience. Despite the light sound of this quartet, the music on this CD swings from start to finish.

In the 1940's, Sidney Bechet recorded with a similar quartet that featured his own dynamic clarinet and soprano sax playing, plus Chicago cornetist Muggsy Spanier, veteran big band guitarist Carmen Mastren and the solid New Orleans bass pioneer Wellman Braud keeping it all together. Django Reinhardt, on a visit to the U.S., recorded with a quartet of himself and three of Duke Ellington's bandsmen: the lyrical Rex Stewart on cornet, New Orleans clarinetist Barney Bigard and the rock-steady bassist Billy Taylor (not to be confused with the jazz pianist of the same name).

Each musician on Ed's CD brings the spirit of these two sessions to the table, retaining his own feeling and style in the process. You will enjoy this CD!
