Album Notes
Elana Arian was raised on equal parts Mozart, Mingus, and Mitchell - influences that guided her to study conducting and violin, jazz guitar, and songwriting while at Yale University. In her debut EP, FOREWORD, Elana blends the discipline of classical, the freedom of jazz, and the candor of folk music into her own unique style as a singer/songwriter.

FOREWORD was born when producer Mike Daly spotted Elana playing at New York City's legendary Greenwich Village music club, the Bitter End. Impressed by Elana's "disarming stage presence" and songwriting he describes as "the perfect balance of emotional fervor and technical restraint," Daly immediately approached Elana about producing her first record. Daly assembled a band of a-list musicians to play on the debut, and in the winter of 2003 Elana was joined in the studio by drummer Dan Rieser (Norah Jones), pianist John Deley (Dido), and bassist Joe Quigley (Lisa Loeb).

Recorded in the faraway reaches of Avenue U, Brooklyn, FOREWORD is an intimate album that speaks honestly of uncertainty, joy, and heartbreak. Combining the vulnerability of Joni Mitchell with the complex musical textures of Jonatha Brooke and the soulful finesse of Ella Fitzgerald, Elana Arian's remarkable debut draws listeners in and leaves them yearning for more.

Deserted Island Material
If you were on a deserted island and could bring only one thing (ok, ok...so a deserted island with a functioning CD player and a perpetual power source), it should be this CD. Also recommended for non-deserted-island listening. Good times, man. Good times.

You'll want to say you had her first album
I can only imagine that in a couple of years Elana will be a big international mega-star and those of us who were smart enough to buy her first CD will be viewed as some kind of divinely inspired prophets for switching on to her music before the rest of the world. The pure poetry of songs like This Time is so sweeeeeeet.

True-ness is a rare thing- get Elana Arian's "Foreward"
Elana's "Foreward" is personal, straight-forward, true, brilliant, and just beautiful. Lyrics, melodies, arrangments, performances, nuances are all touching and exciting. "Foreward" will touch your heart, and you will know the songs faster than you can imagine, like remembering the face of a new lover. The songs have the rare quality of always ending leaving you wanting more. Considering the name of the CD, we just got teased. And what a joy it is...

There can be no doubt that Elana Arian is a rising star. "Foreword" showcases her masterful combination of musicality, technique, poetry, and honesty. If you only buy one folk CD this year, choose "Foreword"!

Truly wonderful debut album!
A mutual friend of Elana's and mine has been hounding me to buy this CD - as he should! It is an amazing testament to the young artist that is Elana Arian (at least from what I hear!) Her music is soulful, haunting, and best of all, once you've heard it - is difficult to get out of your head.

Wow, what a great CD!
This disc IS Elana. Her songs are soulful and truly represent who she is. I like that the disc also has a variety of styles. No two songs sound alike. What a hit!

Highly recommended
Great CD -- easy to listen to, over and over again!

Maura "tootie"

Elana Arian, "Mama Bug", is an amazing woman. Her voice, music, and lyrics fill my heart with complete joy and warmth. I already have all the lyrics memorized (because they are so catchy and well put). This woman is so wonderfully awesome, and she puts her heart and soul into her songs. I personally ADORE her style of scatting, it is unique and very cute! Her style of music is so great, it is appealing to every kind of person out there. I love this cd so much and i can not wait until she makes a new one.

You've stumbled upon greatness...buy ten copies
Arian is a pure pleasure when performing alone: masterful guitar-work, angelic voice, and heartfelt, soulful lyrics. Add this seasoned and spirited crew of musicians behind her on FOREWORD and you achieve true greatness.
If you buy one copy of FOREWORD, you'll wind up giving it to someone and then kicking yourself that you gave away your only copy. Instead, buy ten and prepare to re-order within a week's time. This is a real gem.
