"Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink. ... Consider the lilies of the field; they toil not, neither do they spin; yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these". Text adapted from Matthew 6:25-34, KJV. With a mandate to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and through the creation, exploration and celebration of women’s repertoire, Vancouver’s renowned Elektra Women’s Choir has taken a leadership role in the international classical women’s choir movement. A multiple national award-winning ensemble, Elektra is known for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for women and frequently commissioning and recording new works. Its appearances include performances at the distinguished National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (February 2003 and March 1997), including memorable New York performances at Carnegie Hall, Riverside Church, and Avery Fisher Hall. Elektra was honoured to represent Canada at the Fourth World symposium on choral Music in Sydney, Australia (August 1996). Elektra offers a series of outreach programs annually, with a strong emphasis on encouraging and developing the skills of youth. The choir has released 11 including its JUNO-nominated CD Elektra Women’s Choir. In April 2013, Elektra toured to San Francisco to participate in the New Music for Treble Voices festival and was selected to perform at the 2013 Chorus America Conference in Seattle. Elektra was founded in 1987 by co-conductors Morna Edmundson and Diane Loomer, C.M. In 2009 Morna Edmundson was appointed Artistic Director. The choir is honoured to work with outstanding accompanist, Dr. Stephen Smith.
