Vocalist Elena Koleva and pianist/accordionist Plamen Karadonev present “Fifth Season Quartet” with music from their newly released album “Beyond Hope ”- joined by Austin McMahon (drums) and Greg Loughman (bass) and many guest musicians such as Jerry Bergonzi, Sifei Wen, Fabio Pirozzolo, Steve Langone and others.
Elena and Plamen are based in Boston , Massachusetts ( USA ) where they have spent the last 13 years of their music careers graduating from Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory and continuously performing in some of the greatest jazz venues throughout New England and New York .
As former faculty of New Bulgarian University and an active jazz vocalist in prestigious music festivals in her home country Bulgaria, Elena has taught classes, led workshops, performed and recorded with The National Radio Big Band, Acoustic Version, “The White, Greens, Reds”, Milcho Leviev, Teodossi Spassov, Rumen Toskov, Simeon Shterev and many other established Bulgarian musicians. Recently, as a graduate from the New England Conservatory, Boston- Elena Koleva had the privilege to study and perform with jazz greats such as Jerry Bergontzi, George Garzone, Gene Perla, Carlie Banacos, Bob Moses and Dominique Eade who contributed a big time for Elena’s
stylistic development and professional appearance as a musician.
Plamen Karadonev has been collaborating in Elena’s projects since 1997 when he worked as a pianist and an arranger at the “Bulgarian National Radio Big-Band”.
In 2001 Plamen moved to Boston after accepting a scholarship from Berklee College of Music and soon after completing his performance degree , he recorded his first solo album of originals with a music team of jazz masters such as Hal Crook and George Garzone .The debut album received a national recognition and was broadcasted on Pandora radio and WGBH-Boston. Plamen has presented his music in jazz venues such as – Berklee Performance Center , Cambridge Multicultural Center , Wally’s, Lilypad Gallery, and Ryles. Also, he has performed with top musicians such as Randy Breaker,
Gene Perla, Dave Liebman and Jimmy Cobb, Bob Moses throughout US and Europe .
In 2011, Plamen started working on a new project with Elena Koleva and the
Fifth Season Quartet featuring Jerry Bergonzi, Austin McMahon and Greg Loughman.
With the release of the new album “ Beyond Hope”- Plamen and Elena attracted the American jazz audience with their double featuring performance on piano and accordion which made their professional appearance truly authentic and extremely fascinating among musicians such as Joe Lovano, Jerry Bergontzi, Bert Seager, George Garzone
and many others.
The quartet’s program includes contemporary arrangements of pieces by P. Karadonev, E. Koleva, D. Ellington, B. Strayhorn, P. I. Tchaikovsky, C. Debussy, P. Hindemith and others.
