Elizabeth Capener is a native of Gloucestershire who started her vocal career as a chorister in her father’s church choir where she sang her first solo at the age of 6. She has been heard as Suor Angelica (Puccini), Wellgunde and Freia in Wagner’s Das Rheingold, The Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, has covered Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and has performed scenes from Verdi’s La Traviata and Puccini’s La Boheme, as Violetta and Mimi. She has also sung the roles of Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte and Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, both in concert performances. She has sung with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The King’s Consort, as well as making several recordings and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, World Service, and Classic FM. She has appeared at the Three Choirs’, Southern Cathedrals’ and Windsor festivals, in numerous cathedrals, abbeys and major venues throughout the UK, and in France, Belgium, Germany, Greece and the USA, including a performance of Handel’s
setting of the Gloria for solo Soprano in Falmouth, Cape Cod.
At the age of 17, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition, which results in loss of sight and blindness. In October 2013, Elizabeth’s vision had deterioated to such an extent that she was registered Severely Sight Impaired. Like so many others, Elizabeth recieves invaluable help from RNIB, and this is why she wanted to help to raise many for the charity.
Many of the tracks on this album are songs and arias that Elizabeth has performed throughout her career, from sixth form to present day, and therefore have a special meaning to her.

RNIB's vision is of a world where people who are blind and partially sighted enjoy the same rights, responsibilities,
opportunities and quality of life as people who are sighted. Our mission is to challenge blindness by empowering people who are blind or partially sighted, removing the barriers they face and helping to prevent blindness.

Charles Hubert Hastings Parry's (1848-1918) setting of Christina Rosetti's poem 'A birthday' from Goblin Market was first performed at Bechstein Hall in 1909 by Agnes Hamilton Harty, to whom the song was dedicated. The exuberant music perfectly mimics the passion displayed in the text as the singer expectantly awaits the arrival of her love.

A dramatic representation of the passion as told in the Gospel of John, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed St John Passion for the Good Friday Vespers service of 1724. I Follow Thee Also is scored for flute and soprano (here the flute line is played by the piano), and Bach uses delightful chromatic musical illustration to paint the text 'lead me' and 'draw me'.

Written and published in October 1827, Come Sing and Dance is a setting of an old carol, which was composed for soprano Dorothy Silk. It is considered one of Herbert Howells' (1892-1983) most beautiful songs, displaying a passionate exultation and echoing the 'Eia' of the angels as they approach the newborn Christ the King.

Rusulka, composed by Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) and set to a libretto by Czech poet Jaroslav Kvapil, is one of the most successful Czech operas. The large arpeggiated chords at the opening of the aria Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém invite the audience into the fairy tale world of Rusulka, the water. She has fallen in love with the handsome human Prince and asks the Moon to tell him of her love.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1759-1791) composed Exultate, Jubilate in 1773 during a stay in Milan, for castrato Venanzio Rauzzini who had impressed Mozart with his technical excellence. The Alleluia or Allegro, which is the third and final movement, contains long, florid lines and is a fittingly jubilant finale to Mozart's motet.

The Medium (1946) was the work that first borough Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007) international fame. Monica, daughter of charlatan Madame Flora, in her isolation, playfully enacts a mock-romantic exchange with mute servant boy Toby, imagining what Toby might say. As the intensity builds, it becomes apparent that the tenderness is not just a game.

Born in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1827-1958) was an avid collector of folk song melodies. This setting, which uses the 'Common English' translation of William Barnes' poem My Orcha'd in Lindèn Lea, was his own attempt to encapsulate the genre.

O Fair to See is a collection of songs assembled into a cycle following the death of composer Gerald Finzi's (1901-1956). A setting of Christina Rossetti's poem, the song O Fair to See was composed in 1929, relatively early on in the blossoming of Finzi's vocal writing. Its relatively simple syllabic setting in two extended vocal phrases evokes the beauty of the cherry tree.

Giulio Cesare (Julius Caesar) was composed by George Frederic Handel (1685-1759) 1724 for the Royal Academy of Music to a libretto by Giacomo Francesco Bussani. V'adoro pupille is a da capo aria in which Cleopatra beckons the great conqueror to live by her side.

Taken from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924, O mio babbino is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of her beloved Rinuccio. The short aria, in which she tells her father she will throw herself off Ponte Vecchio bridge if her love is in vain, is packed full of passion and desperation.

Taken from the little known operetta 'The Enchantress' by Victor Herbert (1859-1924), Art is Calling for Me is a whimsical aria sung by Stellina, one of the many princesses who wish to become the 'Prima Donna'. The original tells of how Stellina would 'oust' Dame Melba, however, in my updated version, Netrebko seemed more fitting!

Rumour has it that the plot to Cosi Fan Tutte by Wolgang Amadeus Mozart (1759-1791) was suggested by Mozart's patron, the Emporer Joseph II. Sung by the devoted (at this stage), Fiordiligi, who sings of her constancy in love, the aria demands extreme variations of vocal range and agility.

Joseph Haydn (1737-1809) wrote his oratorio The Creation at the invitation of Solomon, his London impresario. With Verdure Clad describes God's diverse and rich creation of plants and trees. In addition to his wonderful aural depictions of ever-changing, never-ending vistas, Haydn also gave his musicians visual stimulus, for example, in the score at the description of the forests, the notes resemble tightly packed trees.

An opera in three acts by Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901) and set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, La Traviata, which was first performed in March 1853, tells of courtesan Violetta who sacrifices all for love. Violetta is close to death and has given up all hope of seeing her love Alfredo again. Addio del passato sees her bid farewell to her happiness.
