gorgeous album !
I love this CD! Ellen's vocals are earthy and evocative, and her virtuosity on keyboard is a special treat. I also appreciate that it's about half with vocals, half all instrumental (and what a band she has! each one is superb!) - a perfect choice for close listening or dinner music.

Ellen Starr – a great jazz vocalist, pianist and arranger
This CD blew me away. As a vocalist, Ellen Starr sounds like Carmen McRae and Diana Krall combined. She's a virtuoso singer with a huge range and perfect pitch. She's got low tones with the sultriness of Nina Simone. As a pianist, Starr reminds me of the amazing Kenny Baron. And, as an arranger, she's as skillful and imaginative as Bill Evans. What a versatile talent! Surrounding her in this fascinating collection of jazz standards and originals are three top New York musicians: Paul Beaudry, bass; Alvester Garnett, drums; and Joel Frahm, tenor and soprano sax. Their solos are incandescent flights of fancy. Where has Starr been hiding? Her bio reveals she's played in New York jazz clubs for decades. How is it possible that such an accomplished singer and jazz musician is only now making her CD debut? For devotees of great jazz, this CD is the real deal.

I saw Ellen Starr perform at a San Francisco night club a few years ago and thought she was fantastic. I am so delighted that she has NOW given us this recording of classic Jazz jewels which have been expertly performed by incredible musicians. Anyone out there who is interested in becoming a great jazz musician should use Ellen Starr as their professor and this Lucky People CD as their audio textbook. As for the rest of us ...sit back, listen and enjoy....because this is REAL jazz.

Ellen Starr is truly a great musician. This CD will rank among the jazz greats: Her singing is sublime, with a huge range and a rainbow of colors, she is the perfect performer for the repertoire she has chosen. Her arrangements are original and startling, and her pianistic skills complete a picture of one the 21st century's great performers. The backup band is more than first rate. This is an album to play again and again.
