Album Notes
After much time spent as a peripheral member of many stellar acts like Luna, Ben Lee, Crooked Fingers, Britta and Dean, ect. Lara Meyerratken fronts her own band, El May.

The Perth-born, Sydney-raised multi-instrumentalist recently returned to the stage in her native Australia opening for some brilliant acts including Feist, Explosions in the Sky and The Brunettes.
Her indelible sense of harmony made a big noise (quietly) as the secret weapon on Ben Lee's Awake Is the New Sleep. Independent film lovers will recognize her song "Hero" as the one sung by Michelle Williams in "The Baxter."

El May - Sound the Key Note
I love this cd, the singer has a beautiful, unique voice. I've seen her play with Ben Lee and solo during a Ben Lee show and she is very talented.

El May - Sound The Key Note EP
Current mood: happy
Category: Music

Have had the great pleasure and joy of receiving and listening to Lara Meyerratken's new 4 song EP,"Sound The Key Note" Lara is a multi talented musician/composer who has played with Luscious Jackson,Luna,Dean and Britta,Ben Lee,among others. Her music is serenely joyous, with more than a touch of realistic sadness, they are lullabys to life, taking notice of all the little nuances and events that make up a day in the life. The opening song "I Remember" brings mind,so many rememberances of past relationships. The line that really hits me is "why do things get so dirty before we start to shine, why should I hit the bottom before I start to climb?" I truly love this song. The next number"Draining A Lake" is highlighted by incredible, self assured piano work.It is a combination blues, spiritual,R&B song, that really carries you away by the end, with it's repeating refrain "you're not coming back to me,wouldn't I know by now?" I can picture in my mind Ray Charles and the Raylettes carrying you off totally with this songs ending refrain, building to a epiphanic spiritual climax. The third song "Number Nine" with the line "I will do what she wants to" well, that sums it up ,the beauty and pain of love, complete surrender, putting your heart and soul completely at the disposal of your object of desire....This is a lovely, lovingly put together, collection of sweet, soulful songs. The EP sleeve, simulating a romantic card sent to a loved one, complete with a waxed seal on the back is a thing of delicate beauty. Highly recommended.......check out her My Space page El May,and there is a sampling of her music and a link to buying the EP. I ordered it on Saturday and it was in Thursdays mail. The company,CD Baby, even send you a funny email acknowledging your order.

Great record.

Still waiting for a full-length LP though Miss M. This debut jobby is turning into a bit of a 'Chinese Democracy' type thing.

And while you're at it a few shows in Wales wouldn't go amiss either. I can get you booked into the Rhyd Hall in Tredegar no problem. It might just be you, me and letchy Alwyn there but I'll buy you a pint of Bass and my Nan will cook you a nice breakfast in the morning.
