ABOUT MANZANILLA
Manzanilla is the name of a vast, untamed beach in Trinidad, uniquely characterised by miles of coconut trees and stretches of multi-coloured prayer flags. Manzanilla, on account of its raw, open character, has been a great source of inspiration and transformation for Elspeth. Her second instrumental CD, "Manzanilla", is an ode to that place which, to her, is "not just a place. It's a state of being."

All music on this CD was created by Elspeth on her Roland XP-50 workstation keyboard (with World Expansion).

ABOUT MUSIC FOR THE MOVIE OF YOUR MIND
Whenever people would ask Elspeth to describe her music, she never really knew what to say. Finding it difficult to slot something as fluid and ever-changing as her music into existing categories (although, the way the world works, sometimes we "have" to), she decided to make up her own genres. She refers to her acoustic guitar/vocal renditions as "Acoustic Folk Mantras" and her instrumental electronic music as "Music for the Movie of your Mind". In performance, she has used "Music for the Movie of your Mind" to create an interactive experience for her audience. She asks the audience to close their eyes, and the closed eyelids become each person's "screen" for the visuals that her music inspires.

For a more traditional (rather than coined) definition of Elspeth's music: it spans the spectrum of New Age-Alternative-Folk-Rock-Soundtrack-Conscious-Mood.

****************

Elspeth's four CDs to date are:
1. MOVING PICTURES (2000) - music for the movie of your mind
2. MANZANILLA (2001) - music for the movie of your mind
3. INFINITE (2002) - Acoustic folk mantras
4. WAITING FOR ELAINE (2004) - Music for the movie of your mind

Incredible Caribbean Electronica
Wonderful Caribbean soundscape. This CD fuses a myriad of cultural influences into a seamless and unique interpretation of what is too often a soulless genre (electronica).

sandy beach meets outer space;personalised fengshui; workshop yuh life styled in
Some would think that a wild beach on the East coast of the Caribbean's southern most island, Trinidad, is the furthest place from the ethereal tones of cosmic space heard in this volume. Yet to know Manzanilla is to know that this music is as much of the beach as the calypso and Soca so readily associated with our West Indian culture. If there is one Caribbean artist capable of inventing some new fangled creative perspective, Duncan is it; and Manzanilla (indeed, all her Movie for the Mind volumes)is the primordial sound track. More than music, Manzanilla feels to me like shades and tones. Sounding at times, more like a child at play than the studied accomplishment of a musician; like the kind of personal feng shui you and I could create with a Roland if we took the time - How many of us do? I like that this music inspires me to create in the workshop of my own life.

At first I was in my apartment listening..... but then.....
Was the CD inspired by Manzanilla or does the CD create a Manzanilla?

At first I knew I was in my apartment listening to the sounds... but then I wasn’t sure, things changed, images came, some fast, some slow. It was as if I was here and somewhere else at the same time… I am not sure where, it's all hazy now that I am in my Waking state. The sounds... many sounds ... seemed to come from all directions, even through me... bringing many different realities with their sound vibrations. I was in ‘Manzanilla’ wherever that may be, whether real or make believe... and I will go there again some day soon...

This music infuses me with the magic of Manzanilla. Haunting!
The cd really captures the mystery and majesty of Manzanilla and carries me back to my often weekly drives back and forth on that stretch. Like the drive along the coconut road, the music is extremely theraputic and enjoyable.

My mind's movie as I listen to manzanilla
Manzie’s mansion was photographed and there were stories of walks along her shores. On the shore is where Manzie laid as the sea teased her and the sun smiled with her. I had to go! I wanted to know of this place and so, I closed my eyes and listened. This is what my mind’s eye saw: ‘Travelling into it’, I felt the gentle breeze and she said you are near. The road was winding and the sound of the waves set a rhythm on ‘journeying closer’. Then I saw it, the path lined by majestic dreadlocked ents; there ahead was magic manzanilla. Where is this place I seek? ‘Speak Wind’, guide me. Follow your instinct, feel the rhythm in this magic, open your heart and feel, I will reveal only when ‘a heart comes knocking’. As the images flashed by, my eyes fluttered. Peace. A deep breath welcomed nature’s beauty and reminded me of ‘simple pleasures’; I was now calmed by ‘the peace of the blue sky’. While gazing where sea and sky conversed, I saw them basking in the sun, these ‘driftwood druids’ laid before her ‘humble home’. She did say I’ll find the mansion by the druid ‘gathering’ and indeed there was Manzie. She spoke as a breath, warmly greeting Welcome to ‘the temple of my sea’. Manzanilla mansion, a sight to behold; where at night, she stood majestically in ‘the sun’s reflection’. Where are these druids going Manzie? On a journey, she said, their destination beyond the conversation. While ‘crossing water’ she said with a smile, they are guided by ‘dolphin birds’ that map their path and tell tales of such blessings as ‘the coming rain’.
This is what I saw while listening to Manzanilla, a magical ‘symphon-E’.

Manzanilla evokes so much in this sojourn to the Atlantic shore
The morning noises and the anticipation of the journey; the journey itself and the arrival at this unique place. The tone of the music changes as the trade winds bring the sounds of a distant western mainland to your senses. What batters this coast-sea and breeze-travels far to leave their unique mark captured in the music which keeps evoking. The inevitable rain falling through all of this adds to the cycle reminding you that Manzanilla is also not still, not predictable and great music.
