Album Notes
Hey gang, John here. If you've never heard the term "Red Dirt Music" before, don't worry. We've heard it described as music that is "too rock to be country, but too country to be rock." The truth is, Red Dirt is just as complex and varied as "pop" or "country" can be. The genre gets its name from the red dirt of Oklahoma and Texas, which is where most of these artists are from. The major unifying factor of all of these diverse bands comes down to attitude. They all play the music that THEY want to play instead of selling out their sound to record labels that are more concerned with short term profit as opposed to long term music careers.

Dawg and I are big fans of Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Micky & The Motorcars, American Aquarium, and The Randy Rogers Band. We saw Ragweed for the first time at Rocking The Rivers back in 2007 (held in southwest Montana every August) and it was love at first sight. They exposed us to the Red Dirt scene and we found ourselves singing these unknown songs at the top of our pretty little lungs. Even today you won't see an El Wencho gig without at least a few tunes from these artists on our set list. Like I said, we are big fans.

We've talked since 2010 about making a cover record of our favorite tunes from these artists. Finally, the timing and finances lined up that we could buy the licensing rights to record our acoustic versions of these tunes and share them with our fans. We hope you enjoy this project. Their original artists mean a lot to us as a band, and we continue to be inspired by the hard work and awesome art that those Red Dirt lads continue to create.

El Wencho is proud to be an indie band based out of Bozeman, Montana. If you're at a show, please come say hi! We love to talk about music, especially indie music from Red Dirt country. Cheers gang! -John
